If you find yourself in Great Falls, Montana, a visit to the C.M. Russell Museum is an absolute must. This beautiful museum exceeded my expectations with its thoughtfully curated collection that showcases not only the art of Charles Marion Russell—a cowboy turned renowned artist—but also the rich history of the region. I spent a delightful two hours wandering through the exhibits on a quiet weekday, where I enjoyed the spacious layout that made viewing each piece a breeze. The museum offers a fantastic display of Russell’s works, alongside fascinating insights into his life, friendships, and the Wild West he portrayed so vividly. The museum is also home to Russell’s well-preserved studio and cabin, located just behind the main building. These spaces provide a deeply personal glimpse into the life of the artist, adding a unique layer to the experience. The informational plaques beside each artwork were thorough and engaging, enhancing my understanding of both Russell’s artistic journey and the native art and memorabilia that are significantly represented in the collection. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop before you leave! It features a wonderful selection of items that celebrate the local culture and art. I refrained from sharing too many pictures to preserve the surprise for future visitors, but trust me, this museum is definitely worth your time. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or a history buff, the C.M. Russell Museum will leave you inspired and enlightened.

So you like Western art and history? This museum is dedicated to Russell, probably the most famous Western style artist of all time. Russell would live among the Cowboys and the Indians. He would learn their ways and to put it in terms we can grasp "like a National Geographic Photographer that captures life in remote villages," Russell used his paint brush to capture the ancient wild west. Extraordinary detail, brilliant use of color enraged in the roughness of the times. Looking at his art, one really gets a sense of what it was like to live in back then, in the unsettled west. Of course too, there is a bit of romanticism in his paintings, one cannot come away without an understanding of Russell's appreciation for the world he so engrossed himself in.

Great place. There was a lot to see. I spent ~2hrs inside and some of it I had to skip because I had another appointment I needed to get to. And they still had 2 new rooms they were currently in the process of building. So I recommend either expecting to spend several hours here or make frequent trips. The goods store was nice too. You can buy pottery, handbags , dishes, jewelery, and other hand made goods. Though, it was definitely more expensive than I was expecting it to be for an entry ticket, $18.

I thought this was just going to an art museum but it's so much more! I love the Russell home with it's character and antiques. I loved the Cabin Studio and imagine watching him paint there or coming to check on him and finding him sleeping on the cot. And the museum with it's variety: Western Art, displays on Western life, so much info on bisons, native American items, saddles, hats and a hearse! The museum store is also pretty awesome. They have nice gift items.

We finally went for a visit. Friday and museum was not too busy. Took our time. Very well laid out. Great info beside pictures. Very good collection of C M Russell art. Also lots of native art and memorabilia. Make sure to make time to visit cabin and house just outside the main museum. Beautiful and so nice to c both in such condition. Admission was very reasonable. Looks like there’s more to come. We will be back to check. Sure glad we stopped!

My wife and I visited yesterday. The collections there are outstanding and the display is great. To really see and take-in all that is there would take several visits. The only reason I don't rate this as 5*s is that the staff is standoffish and cold. There was no attempt at even a friendly greeting, nor offer of guidance on best ways to tour or see the museum. So much more could be done in this area to improve the visitor experience.
