At one time the Oregon Military Museum was a five star Museum, but then they tore down the building it was in and now, years later, they have finally found different buildings to house the collection. It might be ready by the end of 2023 or early 2024. Evidently, there is no hurry. The work they have done is very nice, but incomplete. They had several tracked vehicles, including a small APC, 3 tanks, 1 self propelled howitzer and a tracked anti aircraft weapon stored outside. They also had a nice scout car. Inside the old armory building the museum's collection includes a Sabre Jet, several artillery pieces, two recoiled rifles and other interesting military hardware, most of which are not labeled. There were docents on site. All were pleasant but had varying knowledge levels. Camp Withycombe has changed a lot in the last 20 years and I had a lot of nostalgia looking at it in 2022.

We went on June 22nd, a day tagged by the museum as tank day. R The gallery was closed, but on their lot (normally), there are 4 tanks. An M7 priest, an M41a3 walker bulldog, an M60a3 Patton, and an M1 abrams. Also on site is the artillery barn, with American and Japanese field guns and artillery. On the day we went, they had a special vehicle out, called an m114, a failed replacement of the well-known m113. This tank (apc) was out in front, where you could take photos and go inside. On top of what I assumed to be, deactivate machine guns. An m249 saw, and an m2hb .50 caliber hmg. There were also tents, with rc tanks, and one of the fellows let some folks drive his. The staff and volunteers are knowledgeable in almost everything on site and are very kind. I look forward to coming back when the gallery opens! Highly recommend!

Not officially opened yet (9/2022), but Thurs to Sat afternoon are open recently & welcome visitors, no admission fees yet but accept any donation🤗 No climbing on any display but ok to stand next to those for great photo-op 🤗 Guide Phil was really friendly, calm & patient, good stories experience teller. He made the walk-thru interesting, informative & we had very positive impression. Looking forward to its full opening in mid - late 2023

Brigadier General James B. Thayer is one of Oregon’s most decorated war heroes. His many military honors include the silver and bronze stars.

Thousands of Oregonians have served with distinction in this nation’s wars. A world-class museum paying tribute to them is under construction right now.

The Oregon Military Museum was named after one of Oregon’s greatest war heroes. Now his famous son, Tommy Thayer of KISS, is helping make that museum a reality in this place where we live.

In 1945, during WWII, James Thayer’s platoon engaged in brutal hand-to-hand combat with German SS troops, liberating prisoners from a concentration...
