At one time the Oregon Military Museum was a five star Museum, but then they tore down the building it was in and now, years later, they have finally found different buildings to house the collection. It might be ready by the end of 2023 or early 2024. Evidently, there is no hurry. The work they have done is very nice, but incomplete. They had several tracked vehicles, including a small APC, 3 tanks, 1 self propelled howitzer and a tracked anti aircraft weapon stored outside. They also had a nice scout car. Inside the old armory building the museum's collection includes a Sabre Jet, several artillery pieces, two recoiled rifles and other interesting military hardware, most of which are not labeled. There were docents on site. All were pleasant but had varying knowledge levels. Camp Withycombe has changed a lot in the last 20 years and I had a lot of nostalgia looking...
Read moreWe went on June 22nd, a day tagged by the museum as tank day. R The gallery was closed, but on their lot (normally), there are 4 tanks. An M7 priest, an M41a3 walker bulldog, an M60a3 Patton, and an M1 abrams. Also on site is the artillery barn, with American and Japanese field guns and artillery. On the day we went, they had a special vehicle out, called an m114, a failed replacement of the well-known m113. This tank (apc) was out in front, where you could take photos and go inside. On top of what I assumed to be, deactivate machine guns. An m249 saw, and an m2hb .50 caliber hmg. There were also tents, with rc tanks, and one of the fellows let some folks drive his. The staff and volunteers are knowledgeable in almost everything on site and are very kind. I look forward to coming back when the gallery opens!...
