A city classic. What you need, from produce and flowers to meats and cheeses. Gourmet coffee and tea (really, whatever they are) are on-hand for the Yuppie and New Age urban crowd, and candy and barbecued beef and chicken for the old guard (the rest of us) from Amish farmers and vendors are there, also. You CAN get a regular old-fashioned coffee -- you know, what the folks selling it call "coffee," without all the weird, geographic, politically tinged, sometimes "woke" adjectival qualifiers. And the Harrisburg Police Commissioner walks the beat in the market. You can chat him up and have a photo with him. In what I've always assumed is the newer building, on Third, restaurant stands offer some diverse, and delicious cuisine. It's next to The Mill Works (a little too overdone and idolized for me, but the food is excellent, and the artists' galleries and retail rooms are cool, man). If you get literary stirrings, the Midtown Scholar is right across Third Street, though it seems it has some odd pandemic hours, so check before you go. Well, at least as of July 9 (I was in the market yesterday), some changes have arrived. The market was packed, like prepandemic-level packed. I guess people are vaxxed and boosted. It's still great! Read moreThis is a great market and a true gem for our family after having moved here from the DC Metro Area. Tons of culture, great people, and a ton of food choices. Every time we have family in town we bring them here. I do have one gripe and it annoys me beyond belief. The market hours on Thursdays and Fridays indicate that the market is open until 6. I assume this is so people can get there after work like my husband tried to do yesterday. Two of the places he tried to pick up food from were closed early (before 5:30). The market is only open three days a week and until 6 PM2/3 days. Is it too much to enforce hours for all vendors in the market? With the exception of e.vanilla (who only closes early when she sells out of her delicious donuts), I think it’s unacceptable for vendors to close when they want, outside of established hours. When you go to the mall the stores must legally stay open until mall hours end, same concept here. Thankfully Phyllo was open and I had a delicious lamb souvlaki and Greek fries. You can never go wrong at Phyllo! Anyway, the make your own hours thing is the reason for my 4 stars...
Read moreI'm a big fan of Evanilla. It's a bakery that specifically bakes doughnuts. My favorite flavor is cookies and creme. While they are smaller than say like store bought doughnuts, they are fresh and without preservatives. So they taste way richer and have a more gourmet flavor of that deep fry goodness people could appreciate.
Every Friday I visit, and I enjoy all the establishments. Including UrbanChurn which has homemade ice cream and makes fantastic milkshakes that are smooth and loaded with scoops of ice cream. Very fresh.
Next to UrbanChurn is another bakery of sorts, which their name I cant remember. But I love buying their bread!
Lastly, I visit Ying's personalized jewelry shop which specializes in Jade and pearl designs. I'm a big fan of dragons, and the lady helpede find a dragon piece for my collection. As a local Pennsylvanian I support this market and hope it continues to prosper. Strongly recommend people make the trip out on breaks or lunch during their workhour in...
