I travel to Harrisburg once a year for the Pennsylvania Farm Show. In the beginning, it was a chore—an activity that was work-based, supporting the Pennsylvania Beekeepers Association and donating my time in their various booths to both inform the public about pollinators and earn dontations on behalf of the Queen program. They expensedme, to be sure, but because of the 9-9 schedule, I was relegated to the “state fair” food available within the show’s confines. Good, but a mere novelty. One can eat just so many fried cheese cubes or potato-based donuts. After years of enduring the same offerings, I did what honey connoisseurs did when seeking local product, and looked for the best, most local food in the area.
And I found Jackson House.
I can tell you that, having literally travelled the world, I’ve never, ever, found a better sandwich, or burger, and will throw down with those who challenge me. Old school, fresh baked bread, homemade ingredients, and traditional combinations with a twist simply have no equal.
Yes, they are only open 10-2 weekdays, and often turn people away a half hour before closing. Their quality enables their quirkiness, and demands you not only make time in your day, but make a detour in your overall route. In Maryland for business? Detour the two hours north for the best—the only—Italian hoagie around. In Buffalo? Come down for the best burger ever. And if you are in state, there’s no reason not to hit the ‘pike and have the gastronomical reward that is Jackson House.

Read moreI recently went to the Jackson House for the first time and I was not disappointed. A staple of PA state workers for years, I regrettably never went there when I worked in Harrisburg. But, I had the opportunity to return. I ordered the Jackson Burger - American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and their own special sauce on a sesame seed bun. I also got a side of regular fries. I am not kidding when I say it was the best burger I ever had. This place is often packed at lunch time and they actually walked through the line asking for burger orders far before we actually paid. This is because Jackson House cooks their burgers long and slow. It resulted in a moist, well seasoned patty. The entire combination was delicious together. I usually love ketchup and mustard on burgers, but they were not necessary. Not sure what the special sauce is, but it kind of looks like a ketchup aioli.I will say that I did not need the fries. They weren't anything special, though they weren't bad. The burger would have been enough for me.Definitely check this place out if you are in Harrisburg at lunch time. But beware, they close at 2pm and...
