Beautiful beach. The views are so worth the visit. Not the best for small children that need a parent though. The waves are kind of strong. Sometimes they close the water because the shore break is too much and it becomes dangerous. On those days you can only go waist deep. If you want to swim all day this is NOT the place to go. However, the beach is small and not many people go here because it's not the best swimming. If you want to get away from the beach crowds and have a beautiful view, come here for the day. It's free and there are restrooms. Beware: there's NOWHERE at all to get food nearby. Make sure to bring snacks! Dont forget your sunscreen!

Once a pristine coastal area the park is littered with trash, large tents, boom box and generator noises, and sports equipment of temporary (?) encampments. The ancient lithified dune has been trampled over by beach goers and body surfers. Wide pathways to the rocky shoreline cut through the once continuous beach naupaka and coastal ʻiliahi ecosystem. Separately, the parking lot (very limited spaces) offers a photo opportunity of Oahu’s eastern shore with its deep blue nearshore waters. Best to limit your visit to photo taking from the parking area for safety and help conserve Hawaii’s unique environments.

We came here after we hiked the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail. Beautiful fine sandy beach! We visited during the winter months so the waves were wild…good for body surfing! Ample parking spots, the grounds were well maintained, clean bathrooms/change rooms and there are also outdoor showers. Bring your supplies as there are no stores, restaurants or food carts here. It’s a beautiful beach to dip your toes in after your hike. Makapu’u Beach Park is divided into two by a rugged stretch of coastline. We went to the one right next to the Makapu’u Lookout. There’s also Sea Life Park across the highway.

Makapu'u lighthouse trail was an easy paved trail. Kids, dogs friendly. Beware of the hot temperature because of the paved road. Parking was so hard, we literally waited for people to leave and took their spot. If you park your car along the road, you have to walk far inside to the the start of the trail. The walk has few lookouts. There is no siderails or fences, be careful if you hike with kids. By being careful of the edges, without fences we got to see the views better. Must visit if you are vacationing in Hawaii.

Stunning beach with gorgeous blue water, soft sand, views of the cliffs and the lighthouse, and lots of tide pools. The surf can be rough and lifeguards advise only experienced body surfers and boogie boarders with fins. Free but limited parking, bathrooms, and changing rooms. Life guards are present and proactive, advising visitors of surf conditions, rip currents, and directions to beaches for recreational swimming. Great beach for views and relaxing, not for calm swimminh
