To experience sunrise as beautiful, serene, and awe inspiring as any you have ever experienced, make the hike. The gate doesn't open until seven (7 am), so you'll need to park on the side of the road or a little further down the road at the beach park.
Give yourself enough time to get to the top. There's no problem jumping the gate, and the path to the top is paved with several places to take a break or take pictures. The views along the way up (and down), but the best views are at the top. If you step outside the railings there are places to sit quietly and take in the views, meditate, pray, or just sit and enjoy.
The walk up can take your breath away and make your heart race if you go faster than your fitness level allows. The trade winds pick up as the sun comes up and will keep you cool or dry you off.
The path to the lighthouse is closed, but you can clearly see it and learn a little about its history by reading the plaques along the way. The light has a little history and it makes the experience just a little richer even if your not a history buff.
And it's really not crowded at all if you go early, during the week, while school is in session. I can't speak to others times of the year. Make the drive and take the hike; it's better than...
Read moreGreat trail for all skill levels. Scenic views and generally good weather make this place ideal for weekly walks, visiting with friends and tourists who want to see the beauty of Hawaii. This is a paved path, so it is a stroller, kid, and pet friendly. There are no bathrooms here, so please go before you get to the trail. There are plenty of smaller hiker made paths if you decide to go up to the old military bunker or explore a short side trail. However, at the midway point up the trail, there is an information station with two beat-up telescopes so you can try your luck at seeing whales. Parking is very limited, and you will see plenty of cars parked beyond the paved stalls on the side of the road leading into the park. There have been days it has been extended all the way along the main highway. TIP: bring plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks, and if you want a pair of binoculars. Personally, I use my phone apps to track my walk/jog progress as you⁸ gùet really good cellular reception. As a courtesy, pick up after your pets and kids and spouses if need be. Be considerate when taking your pictures as there are other waiting for that same perfect shot. We will be back...
Read moreA Scenic Hike with Stunning Seaside Views
I hiked the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail today and was captivated by its beauty. The trail offers unobstructed seaside views, making it a photographer's dream. The path is well paved, ensuring a smooth walk. However, be prepared for a steady incline on the way up (with one or two resting spots) that might be challenging for those with small children or strollers.
The round trip distance is approximately 2.5 miles with an elevation gain of about 500 feet, and it took about 50 minutes to complete. Wildlife sightings were minimal, but the panoramic ocean vistas more than made up for it. The trail is exposed, so bringing sun protection is a good idea. It’s much less crowded earlier in the day, making for a more peaceful hike.
There is adequate parking, though it does overflow onto the highway as it gets busier. Near the entrance, there’s a sign indicating that it’s an on leash area for dogs, and along the trail, there are a few spots to dispose of garbage or empty bottles.
Despite the incline, this trail is manageable and well worth the effort for the breathtaking views at the summit. If you’re up for a bit of a climb, it’s a fantastic hike to add to...
