From the moment you park you vehicle @ the lot to the top of the hill, it will take you anywhere from 40 min to an hour depending on your physical ability. The path is paved for about 80% of the trek and then breaks into rough surface near the top but needs some work done to it since the paved sections have cracks at numerous places due to the rain I believe. Lovely ocean views and cool breeze the entire time we were climbing but do bring plenty of water as it does get hot in the afternoon as well as u need to replenish the water you losses while sweating climbing to the top. You get wonderful 360 degree view of the mountains and the ocean which surround the light house, even though you can get to the light house but you get to see it from the top and its worth the hike in the end get that magnificent view. We found this during my research on places to stop on a drive around the island. It is just past the pull off for the Makapuu lighthouse trail. The parking lot is on the smaller side, but there was a decent turn around of people coming and going so it seemed to work out while we were there. You cannot see the lighthouse from here as it is around the corner, but it still has a pleasant view of the coastline down the island. There are signs in the parking lot warning of break ins. Please be sure to take your bags with you on your person, don’t leave anything that looks valuable in plain sight, and lock your doors. So please be alert and aware of your surroundings. Overall it is a great place to take in some of the beauty of the island as you make your way around.

Makapu'u Lookout is gorgeous! A really nice view of Makapu'u Beach. You also get to see the two little islands that are just northeast of Makapu'u beach (Rabbit Island and Kaohikaipu Island). And you also get a glimpse of the two islands that are east of Lanikai Beach (Mokulua Island and Moku Iki). Deep blue ocean waters, spectacular view of Southeastern side of Oahu. You may get luck and see some paragliders across the highway. There is plenty of parking here, good time to stretch your legs, get some fresh air, and enjoy the views before you continue up the coast.

This is a must if you visit the island of Oahu. I've been to the Makapu'u Lookout 3 different times and every time I return I'm still in awe as if it was my first time. It is such a beautiful place with amazing views. The very first time I was there I was able to see a few of the military copters going buy. the most recent time I was there I got to see a few para-gliders surfing the winds, it was absolutely amazing. The parking can get a little crazy depending on the time of the day that you go. Make it a stop on your trip.
