Gums Mall-Antiques & Collectables — Attraction in Hawaiian Gardens

We’ve visited this antique store a few times before. They have a great selection of items. My two young daughters enjoy seeing the turtles in the pond and listening to the live music. During our visits, we’d notice us being watched more closely because of our girls—but wouldn’t think much of it, as we always keep a close eye on them. However, this most recent visit was different and left me feeling truly uncomfortable.

Shortly after entering the store, my two daughters and I were approached by the owner in a manner that felt accusatory. She asked, “Your daughter walked in with her doll, right?” I confirmed that she had, but the owner still asked my two-year-old to hand over the doll for inspection. It was checked for a tag and then returned. While I understand the need for awareness around store inventory, the interaction was unfriendly and set a negative tone for our visit. I wondered—what if I had let my daughter pick out a doll and planned on purchasing it, like I usually do? Would we have been questioned in the same way, or worse, accused of something we hadn’t done? It’s a horrible feeling to leave with.

As we continued to browse, we were being closely watched, which made the experience more stressful. My daughters were supervised, and not touching anything inappropriately, yet I still felt as if we were being viewed with suspicion. We came to shop for the second time after five years and were greeted at the door by a very rude lady that manages the place she stopped us at and asked us to put our belongings in our car but we didn’t bring our car it was a very nice day out so we decided to walk in.. she made us feel really uncomfortable basically told us that she would come chasing after us if we were shoplifting. I just think if you want more business you shouldn’t be stopping people at the door making them feel uncomfortable. This was the second time we were here the first time we went we didn’t go back again for five years because of the way she made us feel the first time arguing with us about taxes that were included after our purchase but never mentioned prior. I don’t think we will ever shop there again and the sad part about it is that we bought some thing both times and they were expensive things something that I’m sure her tenants would be happy with. but for her to stereotype us...

I go to antique shops regularly and I must say, I had one of the most amazing experiences at Gum's Antique mall. Normally I like to keep great discoveries private, but I can't say enough about how much I appreciate finding this place and the staff.

From the moment you walk in, it is just that--- an experience. We really felt welcomed. The staff is extremely friendly and strikes a nice balance between attentiveness and privacy while you shop. We visited when it was warm outside and the owner offered us waters as we walked in! I love antiquing and it is nice to shop at a place where it is clear that the staff love it as well.

I found so many unique items at a very, very fair and reasonable price. There were two floors of quality finds. It was fun talking to the owner about some of the items I was buying and where they came from.
