Mount Rushmore is a must-see for anyone visiting the Blackhills. There is plenty to see and do, including hikes to the base of the monument. Having visited a few times over the years, we focused this visit on the evening 'Sculpture Illumination and Evening Lighting Program'. We arrived at 6 pm, which gave us plenty of time to go through the visitor center and walk the grounds before grabbing a seat for the 8 pm program. The program includes a short ranger talk, patriotic music, illumination of the monument, and then recognition of active duty military and veterans. The Ceremony is quite patriotic and moving. We strongly recommend planning your visit to Rushmore to witness the ceremony. Check the park website for dates and times. Mount Rushmore has a large parking structure and so plenty of parking. There is dedicated RV parking, although we didn't see it. The park charges a parking fee, but then thete is no additional fee to enter the park.

I am so glad I stopped to see Mount Rushmore on my way from Missouri to my home state of Oregon (no, I did not take the most direct route home!) It was really fantastic to see with my own eyes! The cost to enter is only $10, and I was told that the ticket was good for a year - so if you are staying in the area on vacation and want to explore the monument/park over a couple days, it's very reasonable. I loved all the state flags, and the park was beautifully maintained, with a great gift shop and cafe. I walked most of the Presidential Trail to the monument, but it was VERY hot that day, and I wasn't prepared with the way I was dressed and didn't think to have water with me, so I stopped before reaching the end, unfortunately. I spied a man in colonial dress, as well as a man from one of the local tribes sharing his ancestor's history with the monument and land. I would gladly visit again, and would love to spend more time!
