As out-of-towners, it took us a little while to find this parking spot (instead of paying at the Glades), but Memorial Park’s hike and bike trails quickly became our sanctuary during our time in Houston. Free parking and the variety of choose-your-own-adventure style trails make it easy to enjoy however you like — walking, jogging, biking, or just wandering.
The park offers an incredible amount of green space, with everything from shaded forest trails (perfect for a couple of hours of hiking) to pea gravel paths overlooking the prairie. The iconic Kinder bridges are not only architectural standouts but also the best spot for a city sunset view. Around the parking area, you’ll also find picnic tables, BBQ grills, and plenty of space to relax.
It can get crowded, which shows how loved it is by locals, but even on busy days there’s always room to walk, listen to a podcast, or find a pocket of solitude. What struck me most is how thoughtfully designed it all feels — not just for people, but with an eye toward the well-being of all creatures that share the space. I wish more urban places took this kind...

Read moreI like the trails here. Some trails are in a lightly wooded area and good for hiking and biking (Green Ridge Trail). You will encounter a few steep jumps (about 2 feet) and a lot of mature roots all across the paths. So a moderate trail for beginner bikers and an easy one for regular hikers. The other trails (Purple Trail etc) are easy for walks and hikes with some paved paths not accessible to bikers. Views: You get to be in the middle of a wooded forest right in the middle of Houston. A few small streams that lead into the Bayou are quite nice to see. Flora: Oak, Pine and Cypress trees everywhere with a few palms (how did they get here?!). Also wild berries, golden rods, and mushrooms (after rain). Fauna: Squirrels and Hares are common. I saw Yellow-tailed Cuckoos and a quick glimpse of a red fox. You have to be really quiet...
