🌟 Adult Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center: A Dream 37 Years in the Making 🌟

In 1987, I stood beside my cardboard space shuttle, clutching a white third-place ribbon from my science fair. My project? The Space Shuttle. My score? 38/100. My teacher said I wasn’t smart enough to be an astronaut. I went home, cried in my diary…now I write books. I carried that ribbon for 37 years.

In July 2025, that same ribbon was in my bag as I walked through the doors of Adult Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

⸻

⭐️ The Basics:

Check-In: Lines can be long but move fast. Fill out all paperwork beforehand so you don’t hold up the launchpad. You’ll receive a color-coded bracelet (and a second if you have allergies—fashion meets function!).

Lodging: I didn’t stay in the Habitat bunks (newly bionic hips). I chose the Marriott next door. Ask for a room with a view of Space Camp or risk facing a parking lot. Marriott kindly gave me points for the mix-up. If it rains, and you didn’t pack an umbrella like the checklist said (oops), you’ll get wet. I also skipped the sunscreen, bug spray, shower shoes, and sheets. Don’t be me.

⸻

🚀 The Experience:

Orientation: Begins at 3pm on Day 1, ends around 9pm. If flying in, arrive a day early. Dinner is school cafeteria style—only better, and the lunch staff are lovely.

Day 2: A 13-hour immersive adventure. Wear tennis shoes. You’ll complete your first mission (roles are assigned—sometimes you’re the pilot, sometimes Mission Control). Watch the mission clock. Time is critical in space!

You’ll ride the 1/6 gravity chair, the MAT trainer, build and launch a rocket (it may end up in a tree), and even design a heat shield. Graduation day comes fast—only one team wins the patch, and one camper gets recognized for going above and beyond. I highly recommend the blue flight suit and jacket—I wore mine to graduation and loved every minute.

⸻

🥚 Room for Improvement:

Egg-cellent Concept, But… The heat shield activity was fun, but the egg waste? Not so great. I’d love to see cracked eggs reused—maybe to teach emulsification or acid-shell experiments. Or bake brownies for staff!

Missing Keycards: Adults can wander after hours, but only with a keycard. Unfortunately, they ran out. Security before 7am was… unfriendly. Staff told me to go to them, but I felt like I was intruding.

Photo Mystery: Photos from “Bunk 1” still haven’t shown up online. They’re supposed to be available 48 hours later—but mine? Still orbiting the void.

More Adult Options, Please! We need an adult aviation camp, more adult sessions, and optional tipping for team leaders who work nonstop. Many of us couldn’t attend as kids—this dream is overdue and sacred.

⸻

💙 Final Thoughts:

Space Camp reminded me that I wasn’t stupid—I just needed to go at my own pace. You’re never too old to chase a dream. But if you’re going to chase it… make sure you catch it.

At graduation, you can bring four guests for a free tour (rides extra). Respect the team leaders and staff—many are college students, future engineers, astronauts, and rockstars.

⸻

🚀 TL;DR: Would I go again? Absolutely. Would I bring my ribbon again? You bet. Was I smart enough all along? Always.

Take everything in. Even the cafeteria food. Even the rain. Even the tiny moment you realize: you made it...

My visit to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, was an unforgettable journey into the world of space exploration. This center is not just a museum; it's an educational powerhouse that provides an immersive experience into the history, science, and future of space travel.

As you approach the center, you are immediately struck by the imposing rockets and space artifacts on display, creating a sense of awe and excitement. The grounds are well-maintained and provide an excellent backdrop for the incredible exhibits inside.

The museum houses an extensive collection of space artifacts, including a Saturn V rocket, which is a marvel to behold. Walking beneath this giant is a humbling experience that really puts into perspective the scale and ambition of space travel. The exhibits are thoughtfully presented, with informative plaques and interactive displays that are both educational and engaging.

One of the highlights of my visit was the space shuttle simulator. It gives you a glimpse into what astronauts experience during a space mission, offering a mix of thrill and learning. For younger visitors and the young at heart, this is a particularly exciting feature.

The center also does an excellent job in educating visitors about the history of space exploration, from the early days of the space race to current and future missions. The displays are comprehensive, covering various aspects of space science, including astronomy, astronautics, and the technology used in space missions.

For families with children, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is a fantastic destination. The interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and educational films make learning about space fun and accessible for all ages. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions and share interesting space facts.

Another aspect worth mentioning is the Space Camp programs offered at the center. These programs provide a unique opportunity for kids and teenagers to engage in simulated astronaut training, which is both educational and inspiring.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville is a must-visit for anyone interested in space and science. It offers an enriching experience that is both educational and entertaining. Whether you're a space enthusiast or just curious about the final frontier, this center will...

We had the most amazing day! There was an endless array of fun things to see and do for everyone, no matter their age. My husband and I had been eagerly awaiting the renovations to wrap up and the space shuttle to make its return before we took our niece and nephew to visit. It’s been ages since we last stepped foot in the Space and Rocket Center—our last visit was back in middle school! All the facilities were in great shape—super clean and bright. Plus, parking was a breeze, and it was nice to see that everything was accessible for everyone. We decided to head there on a weekday, hoping it would be a bit quieter, and we were in for a delightful surprise—there weren’t many crowds at all! This made it super easy for us to explore everything at our own pace. We ended up spending around four or five hours just enjoying and really examining all the exhibits and even went back to a few of our favorites for a second look. We treated ourselves to lunch at the center too (had to tame the hangry kid monsters). As for lunch, yes, the prices were hella high, but with how convenient it was, we thought it was worth it! They had typical snacks/meals that you'd find at a high school football game. We also couldn’t resist grabbing some snowcones afterward—perfectly refreshing while we wandered through the outdoor exhibits! While we passed on the rides and virtual reality experiences, they looked like such a blast and were fully operational! Just wish each ride wasn't an additional charge per person. You know, the only thing I wish we could have done was catch a movie in the IMAX theater! I used to think that was the absolute coolest as a kid. Such an immersive experience into whatever world the movie was about. Of course we had to check out the gift shop, too! Sure, the prices bordered on extortion, but we decided to treat the kids and let them pick out a few fun souvenirs to remember the day. That's why we're the cool aunt and uncle, right? We will definitely bring the kids back again in the future. Such a...
