Calumet Beach — Attraction in Hyde Park Township

Beach is filled with stones and rocks. So the sand is not soft. Bathrooms are full of cob webs and sand. Lockers on the mens side are full of cob webs and spiders. This beach tend to get really loud from lifeguards yelling at people for swimming to far out, to people playing loud music all over the park. Food stand was good with decent prices. But this is not a beach you want to go to to get some R&R. I walked along the shore side from one end to the other and each portion still had rocks. Looks like everyone likes to swim around the national gaurd area. I walked the entire park side it was clean and no lumps in the field. It was a nice beach. Way too far if you live anywhere other than the south side. I can't say that the drive from the north side was not worth it. If you live by the beach it's totally worth it! Not Rocky at all, the water is nice. It's a farely small beach and sometimes gets a bit crowded. Lifeguards we're vigilant, nice, and respectful. If you want to swim or spend time on the sand this beach is great. I would not recommend it unless you live very close to it, though. Not really worth the drive. There are plenty of nice beaches in Chicago to choose from close to you so it really just depends...

Although this beach is a decent place to barbecue with family and friends, I would say the water is dirty. The bathrooms close early. Life guards leave at 7 and they tell people to get out the water but as soon as they're gone you can bet everyone gets right back in. They also have a food stand that serves from corn in a cup to steak tacos and tortas which are decent. My only problem with this beach is the early closing of bathrooms and garbage cans fill up quick to the point...
