The Mountain Top was very disappointing. I'm trying to read and research on this production trying to understand why anyone would intentionally disgrace Dr. King's legacy like this. It's one thing to emphasize that we (people) are all flawed in one way or others; but to fictionalize flaws and make up such a depiction of a man with such an impactful presence in history is hurtful and unnecessary. There is no message of hope witnessing actors portray a powerful leader such as Dr. King as a contradictory preacher, philander, drunk full of obscenities. This doesn't honor Dr. King and whatever message is there is missed through the circus act of the cursing, flirting angel?? Yes, this was a disrespectful mess of a play. The performers were doing their job and they are talented. This review has nothing to do with their ability to perform. This review has everything to do with a storyline that, whether intentional or not, creates a false narrative of Dr. King that depicts him as wayward minister that had this hidden deceptive persona...kinda like someone who doesn't practice what they preach...What was the point? The message was lost in all extra stuff. Not only did Dr. King earn the right to be put on the "pedestal", he was assassinated. So no play is needed to pull him off a pedestal he rightfully belongs on. I wouldn't imagine his final night on earth as a man hiding under his bed or having massive panic attacks or wanting to have an affair with an angel maid??? Especially after delivering such a powerful sermon moments before. Dr. King's work should always be honored. There are so many powerful angles this play could have adopted...but instead, the "creative" direction was this debacle.

Let me start by saying that the two actors were talented and did their best with what they were given. However, the script was an absolute disgrace. This play made a complete mockery of Dr. King's legacy.
In 2025, at a time when we have a leader in the White House actively working to dismantle everything Dr. King fought for, this production was an embarrassment to Black people. It was not only disrespectful to Dr. King’s memory but also to the principles he stood for.
This is not a play you’d want to bring children to if you hope to teach them anything meaningful about Dr. King. I am shocked that New Stage, a theater known for its high-quality productions, would allow such a deeply flawed and offensive portrayal.

Read moreI absolutely adore New Stage Theatre. The selection of plays are always tasteful and well varied. The set and actors are incredible - I am always drawn in until the last curtain call. It is a smaller playhouse than say, Thalia Mara Hall - but the quality of plays that are performed here surpasses any other in my opinion. Plus the cozier environment makes for the perfect environment for your play to unfold before you without distraction. You can even enjoy a glass of wine between sets. New Stage is, hands down, my all time favorite play house and well...
