If you want the BEST Gone with the Wind gift shop, and tour, and the most AMAZING hospitality— be looking for this sign!! Yesterday I made the mistake (horrible mistake) of going to what google called the ‘Gone with the Wind’ museum— which what I thought I was looking for, but what I WANTED was the “Road to Tara” museum!!! It’s the visitors center for Jonesboro and HANDS DOWN, the BEST gift shop for things Georgia and specifically has treasures the “Gone with the Wind” museum WISHES it had. I was SUPER disappointed yesterday, when I ended up in Marietta, Georgia; the REAL place to be is Jonesboro. The tour bus, the gift shop, the PEOPLE that work at the gift shop, the stores on the street, by the train depot... don’t drive to Marietta!! Drive to Jonesboro, take the bus tour, buy great stuff @ the gift shop, and also the little art galleries and shops on the street, then go to Sonny’s for bbq, and eat!! You will think you died and went to heaven! You will never be hungry again! UNLESS you want to do it all over again tomorrow!! I could spend another day like today, everyday!! Made up for all my disappointments I had yesterday, after going to the wrong place!!...

If you’re a fan of the movie “Gone With the Wind,” you’ll enjoy the Road To Tara Museum. Jonesboro is where the final battle of the Civil War Atlanta campaign was fought and is the location of the mythical Tara Plantation from the novel. The museum is rather small but nonetheless interesting.

The museum is divided into two parts. The smaller of the two is devoted to the Battle of Jonesboro. It thoroughly describes the strategic importance Macon & Western railroad that ran through the town. The chronology of the battle between Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman’s Union forces and Gen. John Bell Hood’s Confederate forces is laid out well and easy to follow.

The larger part of the museum is devoted to the GWTW movie. It nicely describes the characters in the novel, the actors and actresses who played them, how the movie was filmed, the story line, backstories and the history of the period and how GWTW fits within it. There are also numerous artifacts from the movie and the area.

The entrance fee was modest - $6/person (senior rate). If you like the movie “Gone With the Wind,” you’ll...

This Is the Real Thing!

You are a history buff and want to see some impressive Civil War artifacts at the very place of the 1864 Battle of Jonesboro? And you love Margaret Mitchell's & Hollywood's GONE WITH THE WIND? Well, in this case this is exactly for you! Housed in a Historic 1867 Train Depot on North Main Street wonderful Road to Tara Museum is waiting for you. Here you may browse Scarlett's stunning dresses and many impressive things such as the portraits of the four main characters reminding visitors of the 1939 Atlanta premiere of the movie. But there is more, much more to see in this lovely museum: Merely its gift shop is worth visiting, and they also offer their "Southern Belles & Whistles" bus tour thru Jonesboro with numerous stops at different attractions. Last but not least at Road to Tara Museum you can book a great tour to "Stately Oaks Plantation" with its various buildings that a costumed docent will guide you around. We at PHIL'S WORLD TRAVEL have been recommending this attraction to our European clients for years and their feedback is so full of...

If we'd known what we were walking into, we wouldn't have gone. We saw a sign for a historic train depot and got excited. We went inside and found a teeny tiny store. We were asked if we wanted to go to the museum. I looked around for a sign or price, but saw nothing. We agreed, even though it was twice as much as we normally spend on such things. As we went back outside to the wheelchair entrance we joked about how it better be a really good museum. False Advertising! We went inside and found it was nothing but Gone with the Wind history. I LOVE history, but I like the real stuff - I'm not into the history of a movie, book, and such. We tried to make it worth our while, though it was very difficult to maneuver my wheelchair in. Eventually we gave up. It's the first time in my life I've left a museum without reading/listening to everything. So if you're into cinematic history, you'll probably enjoy it. We were extremely disappointed.
