It's not really a secret beach as google has it listed, but it's not very busy which is what we wanted for that day. Kids requested a "jungle hike" and a beach. I knew they would not do a real hike, so we picked this because it was 10-15 minutes of hike, followed by beach for the remainder. Trailhead is easy to find and is near houses, but there was ample parking without disturbing the neighbors. The hike down (and up) is not too bad, but is steep in parts, so not recommended in smooth flipflops, easier to go barefoot if you brought those. It was pretty dry when we went, but I could see it turning into a muddy mess with any rain. If you are "walking impaired" in any way, the trail would be quite difficult I think. At the bottom, there is a small freshwater inlet and a large, mostly unpopulated beach with decent beachcombing for shells and sea glass and some big rocks to climb. The surf was insane the day we went, as there is no outer reef there to break the waves prior to the beach, and no lifeguard, so no swimming that day for us. There was a homeless guy living there, like many beaches out of direct supervision in Hawaii, but he didn't bother anyone. There is a lot of shade in some areas from the cliffs so that would be a bonus on a hot day, and you can see the lighthouse and the little unnamed island from the beach and trail and that made a nice backdrop. Overall, for a Hawaii semi private beach experience, with reasonable access, we were very happy with it. Probably my favorite beach we visited...
Read moreSecret Beach is a beautiful North Shore beach accessible by a short hike. The name is a misnomer - there were thirty cars and over 50 people all over the beach when we arrived around 11am on a Wednesday.
But the scenery is unique and beautiful and worth the hike. The beach itself is open water and usually too rough for swimming, body boarding or snorkeling. Even in the summer the waves are large and crash hard very close to the sand. There are no lifeguard facilities so please be careful.
On the west end of the beach are several lava rock formations. The waves crashing into the rocks are fun to watch and photograph. They create a few tide pools to see crabs and small fish. The cliffs above the beach are also unique and photogenic.
The trail is steep in several places. When we went it hadn’t rained in days, so it was dry. If the trail was wet it would be much harder to go up and down. Be careful and take your time. That being said, it is definitely passable for people in...
Read moreAfter a risky hike down a slippery and wet trail, in the rain, we found paradise 🤙 I have never felt so alive, and alone...ever! The adult in me was instantly gone and I immediately began to wander the massive beach like a child. Thing is...there was no one there! I kept stopping and just looking at the endless sea and imagining what it must feel like out there in the middle of nowhere and nothing?! The coast is wild looking and you feel as if your in a jungle, and yeah, Tom Hanks from Castaway comes to mind...sure. This place was very, very special to me and I'll never forget how I felt here! A must do and plan for some extended time here, as you'll not want to leave either. Your on your own as how to get here though... cus...
