Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail – A Stunning Coastal Hike!
This hike was absolutely amazing! The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail is an easy, scenic trek that showcases some of the most breathtaking coastal views on Kauai. From the moment we set out, we were surrounded by rugged cliffs, golden sand dunes, and the endless blue of the Pacific. The sound of waves crashing against the shore made the experience even more peaceful and immersive.
The trail offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. It’s not too challenging, making it accessible for most hikers, but the stunning scenery makes every step worth it. We loved how the landscape changed along the way, from rocky shorelines to lush greenery, and we even spotted a few sea turtles in the water below!
It was a picture-perfect day, and we enjoyed every minute of this unforgettable hike. If you’re visiting Kauai and love nature, this trail is an...

Walking both paths is worthwhile; I'd recommend walking the bluffs with the sun to your back, and inland with the sun overhead. You will walk on/along the golf course for a quarter mile. Respect the walk thru the sacred site. Easy to combine the Makauwahi cave with this hike! Can start at shipwreck beach,, hike to the cave, tour, and hike back in 2 hours. Alternatively, you could park at the cave, hike to the beach and back then tour the cave. This would be a good choice to miss the heat, since the cave doesn't open until 10. End of the trail to the cave is a bit random, but most tracks lead there, and there is a small sign. Likely to encounter horses right at the end. Deserted beach here too. Though a bit rough...

It starts on the beach and you start walking along some cliffs and away from the crowds. It's pretty obvious where the trail is, passing by a golf course (you can see sea turtles around this area if you look down into the water), through some trees, and you end up near a cave and a beach. This is where we weren't sure if the trail ended, but we kept going. We thought about turning back after we walked a ways on the beach, but I wanted to go up until the turn and that's where you hit some rocks and saw a monk seal resting. We kept going and got to a remote bay area and it was peaceful and beautiful. There were only a few others here, but this is as far as you can go. If you try to go more, you reach private land that...
