Nice trail. There's shade through much of the trail until you get into the red rock area. It is also possible that you will be crossing several small streams but it shouldn't be that bad just don't go after a rainstorm. There are restrooms at the trailhead (port-te-potties). There is a fee to park near the trailhead but if the parking lot is full you can park across the street where I saw many people park (its free there). Once you get to the end of the trail of red rock canyon the scenery is beautiful but the views are limited. Do not go past the posted signs and barriers as the environment is fragile and must be preserved in its natural state as much as possible. If you have time and wish to add a bonus to this, hike up to the Vista Lookout point on the way back. This trail is just off the main trail. It is steep but the views from there are amazing! 👍 Be safe and...
Read moreA very calm and straightforward trail. Lots of branching trails and multiple ways to get to the red rocks. Feels very out of place for Lake Forrest when you see the huge rock formations. Start of the trail has its own parking lot, that costs $3 for day use. Only restroom is a porto potty, but there are businesses around the area. Pro tip: check the rock on top of the pay machine, people sometimes leave their paid for parking tickets that they didnt need for anyone to use. Trail has surprisingly lots of wildlife. Plenty of birds, bugs, lizards, deer, and more. It is considered to be in mountain lion territory but have not heard of any encounters recently. Second part of the trail out of the forest like area to the red rocks is a bit more on the moderate level of difficulty as you do climb up steeper ledges but it's nothing crazy. Overall very fun and definitely...
Read moreBorrego canyon has some cool rock formations where it dead ends but it is a very highly trafficked area. Many people disregard the rehab portions of the trail and trample off to get the best selfies. The trail head is popular for cyclist too and had a few bad eggs ruin the experience by riding too quickly kicking up dust and forcing you to run off the side of the trail without warning.
Cannot stress how poplar this trail is on weekend, similar to bridge to nowhere as you will find long lines of hikers and cyclist as you make your way up. It gets less congested as you do side shoot trails such as billy goat or whiting spur.
Get here early too as parking is limited behind the gas station and there was a line of cars as I was...
