I used to think there wasn't a strong climbing community in Vegas. Honestly, it does take a while to penetrate—mainly because so much of the climber population here is just visiting. After giving it a chance I've realized that R2C2 is one of the ONLY places I've found community here. The people who climb here regularly are solid. Mike is solid. Most of the youth are solid (coming from someone who doesn't love strangers' kids).
The gym is a great place to get strong if you're willing to adapt and try different styles. I used to be a rope climber exclusively. R2C2 has been much more rewarding since I branched out into bouldering. There's a decent amount of auto belay routes, though none are really that difficult (the hardest route is a 5.12-). But there's a ton of bouldering. There's a cave, a ramp, a 30° wall, and a 45° wall. Lots of different areas to boulder. The lower grades are soft, but their harder graded problems (V7+) are legitimately challenging.
For visiting climbers, they have showers. Use them, and the locals will like you better. 😜
Locals and nonlocals alike, try not to mind Bill. He won't [whatever the perfectly reasonable request is you have in mind for the gym]. It's...
Read moreThis place is disgusting and they will steal your money. The bathroom looks like it's never been cleaned. If you're coming to town just get a planet fitness membership. The shower in here is so disgusting I bet you get sick if you use it.
Like I also mentioned, they will steal your money. I canceled my membership today and the staff told me they would still charge me for the following month. Even though I canceled, apartently I owe them an extra month... There website doesn't state that, I don't see that rule visible anywhere. The only way you would know to cancel early, is if you ask staff. But who the heck is gonna ask that question when they become a member? And what the heck kinda rule is that anyways? Is it because they start processing the payment a few days early? Well then just refund the money.... but no. Instead, the disgusting and greedy owner will steal your money. Maybe it's because the staff just isn't smart enough to understand it, not sure... but the main point stands. The employees here will actually steal directly from you. Terrible place, go to the Refuge if you want a gym. Might retract this if i can get the issue cleared up, but i doubt they will...
Read moreI really appreciate the overall ethos of the gym. It feels very comforting and family oriented, though many crushers climb here (inspiring!). The only ideology it tries to impress upon you is "dirt bag", which I welcome.
The route setting is fun and enjoyable. I always leave feeling like I had a really nice time. The gym attracts super kind people. I love that there are multiple stories and various nooks to explore. Many people say the grading is soft - the grading is probably a bit soft (though am I imagining that the setters have been setting harder routes lately?). But they also have a moon board if you're trying to get your butt handed to you properly.
They are expanding the gym as well and I hear it will include a kilter board, which I'm looking forward to.
One of my favorite aspects of RRCC is the AC! They don't hold back with AC bills and I am so grateful. It's always cool and a refreshing escape from desert sun. I'll happily pay a membership fee for a cool place to enjoy some great climbing.
I love RRCC and I'm...
