Opened in 1998, and named after the primary benefactor of its construction, Yogi Berra Stadium, on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ, stands as a tribute to one of baseball's greatest personalities, Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra. It is a nice structure, built partly into the side of a mountain, and serving as the home venue to Montclair State University's, and beginning in 2024, NJIT's baseball teams. Over the winter of 23-24, the stadium underwent a multi million dollar renovation which saw a complete overhaul of the playing field, as the grass surface was replaced with new field turf, and the outfield fence replaced with newer, less hard one. The sight lines for the fans are still great. Gone, unfortunately, are the original Berraesque dimensions of the old fence. While the lines are the same, 308 each way, and the center field length is now reduced from 408 to a more modest 388, the alleys are reduced from the original 368 each way to 363 in right and 360 in left. This dimensionality is sacrilegious to the leit motif of the number 8, Yogi's number, for the stadium. On a positive note, gone are the bullpens down the line and in the corners, with new bullpens outside the outfield walls. There are, however still some down point things that are the same, even after reconstruction. The old, now considerably faded seats remain, there is still no shade for shelter on hot sunny days or rainy weather. The biggest problem is still parking, which is still at a premium, and sometimes a considerable walk away, not to mention that that sometimes just getting to and out of there can be a source of consternation and aggravation, as the inroads and exit ways are limited. Once inside however, there are a few caveats. Foul balls can occasionally ricochet around, so please be careful, as you are in very close proximity to the field. Also, on a huge note, always being a little heavier extra clothing, especially when attending late afternoon or early evening games, as the temperature can drop precipitously once the sun starts to set. All told, it's a good place to go, but as far as the recent refurbish goes, it's a case of "It could have been so much more...
Read moreThe stadium is nice. The fans...eeeehhhh. my first time here. The stadium is in the Montclair University complex and the students parents should be worried. The crowd was more than obnoxious. Jackals were playing well and it was a fantastic game until the bottom of the 6th when a fan or fans threw beer into the visitors dugout. Did I mention it's dollar beer night and they are running out in the 5th? A fight ensued and both teams entered the stands to fight with or break up the fight that followed the drunken assault.
Nice stadium but I'll have to rethink coming here if I'm looking to see a baseball game
Maybe the crowd take the Jackals theme too far. Sad because it seemed nice until the crowd turned ugly and obnoxious.
Update: everything still holds true. Especially the fans. Drunk and stupid is the best description. Not some place to bring the family, kids, and if the guys behind me are any indication, Id be nervous bringing a pet.
The stadium needs a little help. Field is...
Read moreThis place went downhill fast. It used to be a great place. I went here tonight last minute to catch a game. You have kids running around unsupervised. I had to wait 2 1/2 innings just for food. They only had 2 people working concessions for a Saturday night. Both girls had to run the cash register, then complete orders. Concessions used to be fast and everyone had a station.
Also there used to be ushers and workers on the concourse. Tonight it was empty. Nobody was walking around for safety and security. I witnessed a grown man out run and push a kid out of the way for a foul ball.
Also garbage was overflowing out of the cans the whole night. Not once was the garbage changed. It’s a real shame because it used to be a great place to catch a game. Save yourself the trouble, and drive the extra miles to the other...
