Over half a billion dollars spent, many years and many teams of people in planning, and we end up with bike lanes that look like a retrofit rather than an original conscious design.
Why, why, why are we completely useless at designing anything that doesn't serve cars. There's no need for two driving lanes in each direction, the world didn't fall apart when there were no cars passing this bridge during construction. It didn't have to be so car-centric, the bike lanes that double as emergency lanes for cars because of some arbitrary guideline, are a JOKE. The walking experience is only marginally better, there's no shade and and it's an endless sea of concrete. I tried walking the span of it this week and couldn't because of the scorching heat, add to that the loud sound of traffic and it's not a pleasant experience.
The city had a chance to make a statement, add bus-only lanes, have light-rail go through it, make it a pedestrian and bike only bridge, something. Instead we have more of the same, an infrastructure project with 90% of consideration taken for drivers. The ramps are nice, the renders of the future park underneath looks nice, but the bridge itself is a massive failure. I remember the architect saying they are trying to correct mistakes of the past and make multi-modal transport more than just an afterthought. Well, now that we have the final product we can see how that was total BS.
I'd like to know what goes through the heads of city officials, architects, and engineers to think this is okay. How did they not foresee the problems they're having right now with people doing donuts and races along the bridge, the design lends itself to this, it looks like a racetrack. The construction guidelines are massively outdated and need to be changed, It's embarrassing for a supposedly world class city.
That being said, it looks stunning at night against...
Read moreA car DOMINATED bridge. Beautiful and iconic bridge... with one main problem... there is more space for cars than for people. All the times I been are always empty, so it would be much better it there was only one lane per way insted of 2. That space could be used to put food stands or something attractive so there is more to do in the bridge. A good example would be like santa monica Pier experience, but in a bridge. Second recommendation: Speed bumps! People drive recklessly here, making it very dangerous for cyclists. Has a lot of potential. Hopefully, they will maintain this bridge well, or unfortunately, it will be a homeless favorite spot.
Edit 09/15/2023: The biggest gripe now is to find parking... (we wish it had public parking) It seems that we now often see less reckless drivers because lots of police are patrolling the area (just put speedbumps, come on!). Wish there was more to do in the bridge besides taking a walk.
Intro aerial photography? This is an AMAZING spot. There is no geofencing in the moment, and you can capture amazing moments, especially if you are a tourist. However, be careful and yield to LAX's airplanes. Since they fly quite close here, we recommend not going higher than 300ft. Watch out with RC interference. Have fun...
Read moreThis bridge is awesome. Its got something for everybody.. if you like tagging there’s plenty of spots that haven’t ever been tagged yet, if you want your friends to see you on tik tok you can launch your rented Dodge Charger into people just trying to get to work or if you need a hair cut just see the barber in the middle of the street. If you want to get away from it all, just climb up one of the arches and smoke a blunt and then ride your skateboard back down again. Remember, you have to out-crazy the last guy that got on the news so creativity is definitely a big plus here. Anybody wanna jump an ice cream truck over the...
