This is definitively the best place to park and start a hike to the BACK of the Hollywood Sign (or The Last House on Mulholland viewpoint). Always lock your doors and take your valuables.
There is unrestricted parking in the Lake Hollywood Estates neighborhood. Please just don't litter, or park in front of a driveway or fire hydrant. Definitely enjoy the neighborhood and its beautiful SoCal-lifestyle houses.
From the Innsdale Trailhead, it takes 15 minutes by foot to the Last House on Mulholland. This is the closest you can legally get to the FRONT of the Sign and one of the best selfie-spots. There’s a drinking fountain and bottle filler too. It's the only one you'll see, so be prepared on extra hot days. Please remember, there's no parking, facilities or smoking around here.
The Deronda Platform is only 5 minutes more of walking. It's within Griffith Park and offers great views of the sign, and the city. Again; no parking, no facilities and no smoking.
From here, walkers can take the paved, Mt. Lee Road, (careful of potholes) to the viewpoint from the BACK of the Hollywood Sign. The walk becomes more strenuous, and is approximately 45 minutes with a steeper incline. Just like everywhere else, there are no facilities and smoking is not allowed.
If you are not from here, take a guided tour. The walking tours are entertaining and not difficult - think more MGM than REI. They safely guide you only on public trails and roads the entire way. While the hikes get progressively difficult, the closest view of the sign (The Last house on Mulholland) is the the first stop and the easiest to get to; it’s always possible to end your hike and return to Innsdale from there.
If you keep these 3 things in mind, your hike will be the highlight of your visit to L.A. No Smoking - This applies everywhere, even paved streets! Don't Litter - Please, "leave no trace." Park Carefully - Don't block fire-hydrants or driveways. No facilities - Currently there are no bathrooms anywhere.
This entire route is bicycle friendly. Innsdale trail is technically no-biking, but horseback riders never use this trail, and rangers don't seem to ticket bik riders here. Within the park the entire road is paved and bicycles are allowed.... but watch the road and its many danger spots...

Read moreInnsdale Trailhead is a great little spot if you’re looking for a short, scenic hike that gets you super close to the Hollywood Sign without a ton of effort. Parking was surprisingly easy, plenty of free street parking in the nearby neighborhood, just make sure to read the signs.
The trail itself is relatively short and not very difficult. It’s more of a walk than a real hike, which makes it perfect for families or anyone not trying to break a sweat. The real payoff is how close you get to the Hollywood Sign. You’re practically underneath it by the end, and the view is incredible for photos, especially if you go in the early morning or late afternoon when the lighting is perfect.
There aren’t a ton of signs along the way, but it’s pretty intuitive once you start. Some parts of the trail are exposed, so bring water and sunscreen if it’s hot out. Also, be respectful of the neighborhood, this trail starts near people’s homes.
Overall, I’d definitely recommend it if you want an easy, quick way to see the Hollywood Sign up close without battling crowds or doing a strenuous uphill climb. Four stars only because it’s short and not a “wow” hike in terms of terrain, but the views make it...
