Bruce's Beach — Attraction in Manhattan Beach

Definitely a place full of history.

This Beach was once owned by the Bruce's, an african american married couple, which they purchased in 1921. They purchased it in order that blacks across California would have a beach to go to and enjoy themselves. White city officials tried everything in their power to persuade blacks from going to the beach.

The tactics were downright dirty.

Eventually, in 1924 city officials realized that they could not dissuade blacks from coming to relax and enjoy themselves at Bruce's Beach. The city or county then used the Eminent Domain Law to illegally usurp the land from the Bruce's through racist means.

It was not until recently that either LA County officials (possibly LA City Officals) decided to give the land back to the Bruce's through their descendants of the Original Bruce's who purchased the land in 1921. According to some reports, the land is worth $20 million dollars. However, I beg to differ. If you see in person for yourself all the expensive housing located near the beach, you will know that $20 million is an understatement.

At any rate, the beach is now black owned. Beautiful piece of property which is the shore of the Pacific Ocean.

Nice little public beach, on the line between Redondo and Manhattan. First time to the area.... I'm visiting from Louisiana. When I was about 18, (many, many moons ago...) a friend of mine wanted to move to this specific area... saw it in a magazine or something (this was before the magic of the internet, lol)... Anyway, i was in the area for work and just wanted to visit and this park is where I stopped. Obviously parking is a premium anywhere close to the beach, but the park has a 3 level tiered parking lot. While it was pretty crowded, there was still available parking and there seemed to be a constant ebb and flow from the parking lot. At the bottom, it appeared to be the lifeguard or police station. There was a good mix of folks in the area... retirees exercising, young moms with children and all ages of guys in and out trying to catch a few waves.
