Soul Surf Sessions — Attraction in Manhattan Beach

Surfing was always on my bucket list, so after being diagnosed with stage 3C cancer and spending almost 3 years in treatment I figured it's time for some fun! My sister came to visit and we took our first lesson together with the awesome Heather Alley. She was a great teacher, enthusiastic, thorough, patient and safety conscious. We learned the basics on land, then got in the water. I have a seriously bum knee on my right leg so had to surf "goofy foot" left leg dominant, which was not intuitive, but I was getting the hang of it! So fun! My sister did great, able to get up on the board properly. Heather really is great, stays in the water with us the whole time, helping us get the right wave to try out, kept us from getting ahead of ourselves! I had an amazing lesson with Sabinka! After taking my first lesson in Hawaii, I wanted to take a second one in CA to get comfortable with the waves here especially since I wasn't having much success with catching them. I found Soul Surf Sessions and I'm so glad that I booked my lesson through them. Sabinka was SO knowledgeable and gave me so much information on how to read waves, my paddling technique, and popping off my board that I saw a huge difference and felt like I learned so much. She was also so patient, kind, and SO COOL! She also wanted to make sure that the surfing conditions were right so she asked if we could push my time a bit later which I truly appreciate that she wanted me to get the most out of my lesson. My partner and I did a day long private surf lesson. We were picked up up early in the morning, perfectly on time. Heather took us to a great breakfast spot in our neighborhood. We drove out to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles, got to hear great stories about the surfing world. We went to a few spots through out the day to find the best learner waves. We both stood up and got many great take aways from the day. We were able to begin surfing on our own with a great foundation of knowledge. Heather is extremely personable and fun to be with.
