War Memorial Stadium — Attraction in Maui

I have many fond memories and personal stories that belong at this Stadium. I even met my high school sweetheart and my wife at the Hula Bowl held at War Memorial Stadium back in January of 1998.

But man. Super bummed to see the Stadium today and look at all of the eye sores of the entire facilities and park. There are some closed areas and some failing edges of the stadium, closed sections and the terrible pot hole parking lot, where we used to practice driving.

I don't remember it falling apart so badly as a kid growing up here, being born and raised from here. Inside and out.

I don't know or understand what happened or how could this have happened? Parks ran out of money? County ran out of money? Where do all the pride go?

Even when we were doing Kiwanis track or even playing High School sports there. I don't recall it being so bad and so...

Thought I’d share a recent update since the last piece of info is from 8 months ago lol; The Satoki Yamamoto Track IS open as of 6/8/23. Lanes 1,2 and 3 are closed, but the rest of the track is open. Also I saw a guy doing stadium, bleacher runs, so you can also use the guest side stadium stairs to run up and down if you want. As far as I can tell from the limited info online, the hours of operation SHOULD be 7 am to 7 pm, however the groundskeeper told me he was going to lock up at 6. When I told him that I was under the impression that the hours were 7-7 he said, “oh nah, they changed it.” I didn’t fight him on it, but would love to see if that’s accurate. This is the only public track in the state of Hawai’i. As long as there isn’t a game going on or some other event it is free to enter and use. No dogs or bikes makes it a very friendly place to workout or walk around the track. There is a paved path surrounding the track and grandstand that is ideal for hill running. Bleachers surround the track and field complete with two long jump pits. The surface of the track needs to be redone. Recently their was patchwork done and all the lines, marks and numbers have been repainted to give the look of a newly surfaced track. There are two restrooms and water fountains too.
