I visited Hosmer for the first time on 15 June 2013 to attend a meeting; since I was 40 years in the library and information field, I am still fond of libraries and eager to look around at new ones. Of note is that there were half a dozen people waiting at the door before the morning opening. After locating the 40-50 seat capacity meeting room and visiting the men's downstairs, I looked upstairs. Hosmer is a historic Minneapolis Public Library branch, now part of the Hennepin County library system, with a floor plan from earlier days and an open rectangular addition. A used book sale was going on - the speaker that day bought three books. The fiction area is modest but heavily supplied with popular paperbacks - particularly mysteries and romance novels. There are also children and teen areas besides a range of non-fiction. All the computers were in use minutes after opening. The reference/information desk in the middle of the space fronts on the shelves of the core reference books. In Minnesota through their country or regional system, 99.9% of residents have access to all major library resources in the state. Read more(1) When I called this library to ask to my suggestion for purchase item be put on hold for me to pick up the librarian insisted I pick it up from her at her desk. Then she offered to check it out in a manner indicating she suspected I would walk off with the book without checking it out if she did not check it out herself.
I do actually buy a book when I want my own copy of it.
When I stepped outside of the library minutes later I saw a tall male lurking near the driver side front wheel of my motor vehicle. This male claimed "a lot of vehicles like mine had been stolen in this area recently."
Was he suggesting my vehicle might be stolen if I return to this library?
(2) August 2022 update. When I checked the library catalog to request my suggestion for purchase item be sent to a library near me I found Hosmer Library had put BOTH HCL copies of the item on display there so I could not request it.
