Long ago this lake was just a marshy area with a few ponds, but they dredged it out to a depth of about 15 feet. This makes Nokomis a good sailing lake because, though small, just about every part of the lake besides, the small bit separated the cedar bridge, is free of weeds and shoals. This contrasts favorably to Bde Maka Ska and Harriet, both of which have several patches of lake weed think enough to foul keels and rudders. Traffic at the launch is lower than the other lakes as well, especially Bde Maka Ska. There are a lot of paddle boards, canoes, and kayaks, so any vessel must keep a careful lookout. The water is murky but usually warms up pretty well in the summer. Sand castle offers tasty food and drinks in the summer months. In the winter, ice fishing and hockey happens out on the ice. There is, of course, a nice park around the entire lake, with walking and bike paths, 2 beaches, 2 fishing piers and a few playgrounds. Parking can be a bit tight, especially on the North side of the lake.

Lake Nokomis feels like a slightly smaller version of Lake Calhoun. It's got kayaking, pedal boats - last I checked - and a food place whose name I don't remember. There's a serenity about Nokomis that I feel the more popular lakes lack, maybe less foot traffic? In the summer I'm often able to get a whole dock to myself where I watch ducks swim lazily. The ducks are often there on cooler summer days. This may be my favorite lake in Minneapolis. Summer's almost here, and Lake activities should be open again soon so make sure to check it out.

Such a peaceful park!! We came here after an eventful day to wind down. It was so relaxing and peaceful watching the sun set from the lake. It really calmed our systems after a hard work week. A beautiful sunset on the lake on a hot summer day, can’t get better than this. One gripe we had that had nothing to do with the services more of nature itself was there are a ton of mosquitoes and flies that ate us alive the first half of our ride. As the night settled it seemed like they went away.

We love Lake Nokomis, the trails are relaxing, there are lots of parking options and there are nice shaded areas. You can bike, run or just walk around the lake in this area. There are trails for bike and trails for running or hiking. You can rent kayaks, paddleboards and other water related equipment. Their beach is small, but nice and there were lots of people there. We try to hit lake nomokis wheb we are in the area.

Really nice park in the middle of the city, but because of that parking is often a nightmare (even in the pay lots) and its almost not even fun because you're just battling crowds, trying not to get run over by bikers and runners and if you want to take photos there's always random people in them. I recommend going on a weekday if possible, especially in the morning.

Excellent park. Well kept. Multiple tracks to walk and bike on so that users of the park can find their own way to better health. Loses a star - when lifeguards are there parents- usually the father - get yelled at for playing with their own children in the water. Shut up and let fathers and their kids enjoy one another before the divorce.

Description
Lake Nokomis is one of several lakes in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and part of the city's Chain of Lakes. The lake was previously named Lake Amelia in honor of Captain George Gooding's daughter, Amelia, in 1819. Its current name was adopted in 1910 to honor Nokomis, grandmother of Hiawatha.
