Long ago this lake was just a marshy area with a few ponds, but they dredged it out to a depth of about 15 feet. This makes Nokomis a good sailing lake because, though small, just about every part of the lake besides, the small bit separated the cedar bridge, is free of weeds and shoals. This contrasts favorably to Bde Maka Ska and Harriet, both of which have several patches of lake weed think enough to foul keels and rudders. Traffic at the launch is lower than the other lakes as well, especially Bde Maka Ska. There are a lot of paddle boards, canoes, and kayaks, so any vessel must keep a careful lookout. The water is murky but usually warms up pretty well in the summer. Sand castle offers tasty food and drinks in the summer months. In the winter, ice fishing and hockey happens out on the ice. There is, of course, a nice park around the entire lake, with walking and bike paths, 2 beaches, 2 fishing piers and a few playgrounds. Parking can be a bit tight, especially on the North side...
Read moreI love coming here. It’s right off the greenway so you can bike there. There are so many points of entry, the main one being the beach that has multiple lifeguards and a dedicated swim area. It’s great for families with kids because there’s extra safety (lifeguards), a playground, food, restrooms, and they have rentals if you want to go out in a kayak or swan boat. The lifeguards take scheduled breaks and during this time no one is allowed in the swim area. This is a great reminder to hydrate, put on more sunscreen, and have a snack. Smaller children will need adult supervision. The lifeguards have rules in the swim area, but nothing that will greatly impact your time there. It’s all to make sure everyone has a safe time that is not bothered by anyone rough housing or taking up space with floating objects. There are other beaches along the shoreline if you’re looking for something less regulated....
Read moreI have been coming to Lake Nokomis since the 70’s. I love this beach and lake. It is an amazing lake to walk around and be near the water all the way around. There are the buggy’s to rent if you want, bikes, and kayaks, etc. I love the Sandcastle cafe which has some really nice options for lunch. They have lots of vegetarian options that are not just deep fried fast food. I had a brown rice bowl with Kimchi yesterday and I have had a falafel wrap, and they also have a mozzarella wrap. They have amazing fresh Pica de gallo and chips. You can sit and overlook the water and they also have entertainment certain evenings. I think Nokomis gets overlooked sometimes with the larger lakes like Harriet and Lake Calhoun, but I say it is definitely worth a walk and a bite to eat. If you found this helpful please give me thumbs up. Thanks....
