La Colton Hall, oggi sia edificio governativo che museo, venne costruita nel 1847/49 da Walter Colton che una volta arrivato a Monterey come cappellano sulla nave del commodoro Robert F. Stockton, vi rimase e fu nominato primo alcade (sindaco) della città. Colton, in qualità di alcade, fu anche sindaco, coroner, giudice, sceriffo, responsabile dei pesi e delle misure, pubblico ministero e esattore delle tasse, e fu proprio sfruttato appieno i suoi poteri "assoluti" che riuscì a recuperare i fonti per la costruzione del palazzo, che i cittadini poi, a fine del suo mandato gli intitolarono come ringraziamento per l'ottimo lavoro svolto. @aremytravels

Small but historically important free museum. Plan on about 15 minutes. It's mostly about creating the State constitution. Also a nice view out the balcony. Worth a visit. Did I mention it was FREE?

The grounds are beautiful and the history on the placards are a definite must read. The bear statues are cool. The park is very clean and manicured.

Description
Colton Hall is a government building and museum in Monterey, California, United States. It was built in 1847-49 by Walter Colton, who arrived in Monterey as the chaplain on Commodore Robert F. Stockton's vessel. He remained and was named as Monterey's first alcalde in the American Period.
