Unacceptable Handling of Mental Health Referral and Patient Care

I recently had an extremely disappointing and frustrating experience with Piedmont Healthcare Family Practice in Lake Norman, specifically involving Dr. Kahn and the office staff. My son needed a mental health evaluation and therapy, and initially, the nurse was helpful in setting up a referral to LifeStance. We attended his first appointment without issue, but at the second visit, LifeStance informed us they do not accept our insurance. This was a significant setback, as it wasted valuable time and delayed my son’s care.

When I called the office to address this issue, the nurse became defensive, mistakenly assuming I was upset with her, though my frustration was directed at LifeStance for the misinformation. I then spoke with the receptionist, Jordan, who was dismissive and unhelpful. She blindly transferred me to the office manager’s voicemail, knowing the manager was not in the office, and refused to provide any further assistance.

I immediately contacted Annette at Piedmont Healthcare’s corporate office, who promised to relay the message to the office manager and have her call me the next day. However, eight days passed with no response, despite a follow-up call to Annette. Instead of addressing my concerns, I received a call from Dr. Kahn’s office discharging my son as a patient—without any prior discussion, explanation, or attempt to resolve the situation.

This lack of communication, accountability, and basic patient care is unacceptable, especially for a family practice that should prioritize the well-being of its patients. The staff’s actions—particularly the nurse’s defensiveness and the receptionist’s refusal to help—directly contributed to my son losing access to care at a critical time. The failure to follow up after multiple attempts to resolve the issue only compounded the problem.

This experience has caused unnecessary stress and further delayed my son’s mental health treatment. I strongly advise others to consider alternative providers who value clear communication, patient advocacy, and...

I've been a patient of Dr. Barker for many years. I think he is a really great medical doctor.

I am 55 years old, a professional with a doctorate degree in another field, and even though I am quite healthy, I have had numerous medical doctors over the decades ranging from sports medicine to about every other discipline. This includes when I lived on campus at Duke University in the early 1980s, and later at UNC-Chapel Hill. I would place Dr. Barker at either the best or tied with the best doctor I have ever had, out of well over 16 different doctors I remember during all of the past 5 decades.

His staff is courteous, and they are SO easy to work with. I saw a review about their supposedly being "racists," and that is simply NOT so. Anyone who has been around their offices would clearly see that they have African Americans who work there - I know because I kid around with two beautiful African Americans every time I go there to have blood drawn twice per year. And I regularly see patients there who are of color - Hispanic, African, etc.

Again, I really believe Dr. Barker is incredible. He takes the time to answer my questions, and I know that he really deeply cares about his patients.

I have not been asked to write any review by anyone. I simply noticed on a Google search to get the office phone number to refer another patient to Dr. Barker this morning, that for some reason a low rating was placed online for Dr. Barker. That really really bothered me to see it. That's just not right, and I am writing my first ever online review to straighten that out. Dr. Barker and his staff are TOP Notch. I refer them new patients all the time, and allow my grown children to go there. I would NOT do that if I felt they were anything but the BEST in Mooresville and Iredell...

Dr. Campbell was the greatest doctor I've ever met in my life. Upon his passing (and it broke my heart) his replacement refused to write my sleeping medication. She blurted that out right off the bat, without me even asking about it. Good thing I had just explained that I would be a few weeks late on follow up med appointment and Dr Campbell had sent 3 refills to Walgreens (because he knows I have a disabled child that comes first). She suggested Camo meal tea(if I spelled that even close) to help me sleep instead of my medication. I live on a farm, drink a cup of coffee in the morning and sweet tea during the day, maybe a cold beer after a really long hot day, I drive a 4x4 truck not a Prius. (Nothing against you Prius drivers, it would never make it to the barn on my property) I don't have tea time, I had already decided she wasn't for me when she suggested I see a psychiatrist for my sleeping medication. That left me looking at myself because I hadn't been able to get a word in to be judged to see any specialist. That did it for me! no tea time at bedtime in my home & no psychiatrist required(we hunt and I've seen that question on many applications about seeing psychiatrist). I'd be taking a spot that someone who needed help could be scheduled for.(her I was thinking). Then I see a tattoo on her leg, and I think she use to be Normal, now with this income she has her special tea and thinks she can look at someone and diagnose. 17yrs of being a patient and it took her 15min to convince me not to return. Dr Edward Campbell, I appreciated your friendship all you did for my family, all you did for your Country and your missions for humanity health. I miss you brother, see you when...
