First-time visitor, traveling through and wanted to visit since it was a blue star Museum. Went into admissions not noticing the "out to lunch" sign. Which I find a little odd, i would think that someone could find time to have their lunch during slow times. Didn't seem like there would be a steady flow of people coming in and out. After being rushed out of the admissions office, so not to disturb lunch, we decided to go on back through the grounds and just show our military ID afterwards. Gorgeous buildings and my kids really enjoyed the few child geared activities. Was not aware that we were not supposed to go through the main house without being on a tour. That probably was part of a conversation that would have happened at admissions. Sorry about that. Was in a time crunch so didn't end up having time to go through a tour. Feel like maybe the website should have gone through tour times just so we could have visited at...
Read moreI recommend a visit to Andrew Jackson's best friend's house, Judge John Overton. This is an underrated experience (maybe not in terms of reviews, but definitely in terms of the traffic it gets relative to the Hermitage). The 1-hour tour of the house was a memorable one that covered many details of the personal lives of its occupants and the lifestyle of the times on the frontier. This house was a stone's throw away from the fields where the Battle of Nashville raged, even having a shell hit the living room. Beyond it's political and military significance, the location was also host to a tribe of Native Americans back some 800 years ago. The tour guide, Amy, was well informed, articulate and clearly enjoyed sharing what she knew (it really makes a difference).
I also can't get over the fact that the patriotic fabrics of the time depicted George Washington in a...
Read moreI was pretty unimpressed with the tour, house, and grounds. I feel there are better places to go for a more concise and informational tour in the Nashville area. The museum that visitors view before the tour has a LOT of facts to take in and I was not sure what I was supposed to get out of it. Traveler's Rest's website advertises Mississippian Indian mounds but they are no where to be found (apparently the house is built on top of one?). The house was used as a railroad office so its not as authentic or ornate as some of the other Nashville historic homes. The tour was okay but we spent a lot of time in some rooms and glanced over others. Overall, there are just better places to go for the same...
