To call Rosenblum's a "bookstore" is to miss its true significance to the Chicago and Skokie Jewish communities. Rosenblum's is a home, our communal bet midrash, our gathering place, our place to share stories and get news. Avi, the owner, is a national treasure, and has a huge heart that encompasses all Jews, from whatever stream, including the unaffiliated. The store contains all of the books and religious equipment you need to live a Jewish life. He keeps the store stocked with the newest and best volumes in their proper season, and gives discounts for many causes. I love that when you walk in, you always know where you are in the torah and daf yomi cycle, and what holiday is coming up by the books on display. Those who wrote that they didn't get the attention they expected obviously did not go up to the counter and start a conversation. Also, if you don't want others to hear what you are saying and join in the conversation, then you are in the wrong place. Once you tell the staff where you are from, it will inevitably lead to a game of Jewish geography with stories that will likely never end. If you are just looking for a particular title, buy on the internet. If you want to feel part of the Jewish world, stop in at Rosenblum's after you pick up some lox...

The store was out of two books listed on their website, but he said they'd see if they were available. My only critique is that they waited to call me until the books arrived eight days later, when I had already ordered them from that big e-commerce company (for the exact same price). If they had called when they found the books still available and placed the order, I would have been happy to give Rosenblum's my money instead. I'll be a...
