Hale'iwa Beach Park is an absolute gem on Oahu's North Shore, especially if you're hoping to see sea turtles in their natural environment. This beach has quickly become one of my favorite spots for snorkeling, and for good reason. The turtles here are plentiful, and it's an incredible experience to watch them glide gracefully through the water just a few feet away.
The snorkeling conditions are generally good, but it's important to note that the area is filled with coral and jagged rocks. While this makes for a vibrant and diverse underwater landscape, it also means you need to be cautious while exploring. I'd highly recommend bringing a pair of water shoes to protect your feet as you navigate the rocky areas. The coral formations are stunning, and the array of marine life you'll encounter makes it well worth the effort.
The beach itself is peaceful and less crowded than some of the more tourist-heavy spots on the island, which adds to its charm. It's a fantastic place to relax, take in the natural beauty, and spend a day in the sun. There are also picnic areas and shaded spots, so it's easy to make a day out of your visit.
Overall, Hale'iwa Beach Park offers a unique and unforgettable snorkeling experience. Whether you're a seasoned snorkeler or just looking to try something new, this is a spot that should be on your list. Just remember to be mindful of the rocks and coral, and you'll be in for a treat with the turtles and other marine life that call...
Read moreThe park area has restrooms, showers, a playground, and basketball courts. The park also encompasses the beach area. Parts of the beach are rocky, and rocky in the water as well. Not the best area for swimming really, but it’s a great place for paddle boarding or kayaking.
Rent a kayak or a paddle board from one of the local companies and go on the hunt for sea turles and sea lions. I was lucky enough to spot two sea lions while in the bay. One surfaced about 10 feet away and was chowing down on a fish. The other one surfaced about 5 feet away and just hung out for about a minute, scoping out the curious human on a paddle board. They seem really used to humans.
Once you’re in the bay, head left and go up the Anahulu River to spot some very large sea turtles. This is practically guaranteed. It’s a little over an hour round trip, depending on how casually you move.
There are several places to rent kayaks or paddle boards from, but I highly recommend using Rainbow Watersports - you won’t be...
Read moreHale'iwa Beach Park offers a completely different vibe from the bustling shores of Waikīkī. This beach is untamed, powerful, and truly captivating. I loved the raw, natural beauty and spent hours simply watching the massive, rolling waves and the incredibly skilled surfers who dared to ride them. It’s an inspiring sight that made me wish I could join them out on the water!
The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxing. I actually felt so at peace that I ended up taking a blissful nap on the beach, listening to the sound of the crashing surf. This does, however, lead to my one regret: I didn't get up to check for turtles, which I've heard are often spotted in the area or basking on the sand.
My one significant complaint, and the reason for a four-star instead of a five-star review, is the condition of the restroom facilities. They were not well taken care of and could really use some maintenance and cleaning to match the natural beauty of the...
