It’s been a month since we were in Hawaii, but I have to leave a review to sing Suzy’s praises!
We found Suzy because our original surf instructors had to cancel our lesson and they referred us to her. Suzy answered our (desperate) call on a Friday night asking for a super last-minute lesson, and she happily took our family on for a lesson the next morning even though it was her day off.
Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids age 8 and 10) were up and going on the boards right away. But we quickly discovered that one of the hardest parts of surfing is getting enough power and figuring out the timing for when to stand up. Suzy was standing in the water helping “launch” us so we could actually catch a wave instead of just bobbing along in the water. This helped us get the most out of our time on the water.
Early in the lesson our 10 year old cut her hand on some rocks and Suzy was quick to grab her first aid kit to patch her up. Suzy even returned some of our money since our kid didn’t get much time on the water, but we gave it right back to her!
If there’s one thing I can comment on is to book a private family lesson. We had booked a group lesson with our original instructors, but after getting a private one with Suzy, I highly, highly recommend budgeting for a private lesson. Everything is expensive in Hawaii, but you will get the most bang for your buck with a private lesson. The location we went to was super quiet and only had locals so we felt like some of the only people on the water — absolutely magical.

Contacted Suzy beforehand to ask silly questions as I was travelling alone and surfing in Hawaii was a bucket list 'to do by 30'. Suzy responded immediately with lots of information and made me feel at ease even with just words.
Upon arrival one of her friends (Draya) came and picked me up from the airport without problems and I stayed with her for the week. She was another fabulous person who made my stay amazing. Draya made her home my home (and gave me an amazing massage before I left!)
Suzy then went out of her way to make sure I had a fabulous time. I had an absolute blast hanging out with her at the hula show in Turtle Bay.
Unfortunately Suzy was ill the week I was there so couldn't get in the water with me, but having Connor & Matt take me out there was awesome. They both made me feel sooo safe in the water and didn't laugh (too much) at me wiping out and being a fool. Having never surfed before, and being slightly afraid of the ocean, i was scared of surfing thinking 'what the hell am I doing' but I couldnt wait for it.
The week was full of so many wonderful things. SUP with Steve was amazing.
I was like a child in awe of the entire place.
Suzy is absolutely the person to know. She introduced me to so many awesome people and was so accommodating of anything I wanted to do-she even took me to a wedding!
North Shore has stolen my heart and all because of Suzy, Matt, and Draya (not forgetting Mini & Rabbit)

Read moreWhat can I say? If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. This was my first time surfing in Oahu so I had no idea where to surf, and I didn’t wanna surf in Waikiki (where we were staying) because of the crowd. Susie and Lucho were amazing. When I booked with Susie, I had questions, and she was so easy to communicate and responded in a timely manner. She was also very accommodating. My cousins decided to surf at the last minute, and Susie was able to schedule them the day they wanted to. I asked Susie if I could get my pictures taken, and since the usual photographer couldn’t make it, she made sure to come down and take pictures with her GoPro. Lucho was our surfing instructor, and he was a great teacher. Since I already have had surfing experience, we were only on land for about 5 mins, and we headed out to the sea. The entire time during our lesson, he was continually giving me advice and cheers. He even gave me recommendations in between waves. My cousins on the other hand had a separate lesson with him in the afternoon, and since it was their first time, Lucho taught them on land for about 20 mins. And they were able to stand right away when they got to the water.
We were the only ones to surf at the spot so there was no competition and no waiting. And we spotted sea turtles just casually swimming around us!!!
Added bonus: we got to meet Coco and got to take pictures with her!
All in all a wonderful experience. I highly recommend...
