The Makapuu Point Lookout, often referred to as the Lighthouse Trail, offers a moderately challenging hike. The entire trail is paved, which allows you to take your time and enjoy the journey. If you’re not an experienced hiker, remember to pace yourself as the incline can be demanding, and the return trip uphill requires some effort.
But let me assure you, the effort is entirely worth it. The views you’ll encounter along this trail are nothing short of breathtaking. As you gaze out over the majestic landscapes, you’ll appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Plus, if you’re a dog lover, you’ll be happy to know that this trail is dog-friendly. You’ll likely come across many furry companions on your adventure.
Be aware, though, that this trail is quite popular. Parking is free and can be a challenge, as the lot tends to fill up quickly. Some visitors even choose to park outside the designated area and walk to the trailhead. You’ll likely encounter fellow hikers along the way, which adds to the communal experience. However, be prepared for the occasional loud music from fellow hikers, so bringing headphones might be a good idea.
In the end, the Makapuu Point Lookout offers a rewarding hiking experience with stunning views, making it a must-visit...
Read moreThe sunrise was amazing. It was windy, so have layers of clothing with you. You'll get warm on the walk-up, but chilly while waiting for the sunrise. It is uphill the entire way to the end, so be prepared (or take lots of breaks and plan for extra time). My wife and I did it without stopping, but she is a trooper and wouldn't stop even if she was dying (she's had a heart attack, so I know this is true!). The path is fully paved, and we were able to stay centered and safe even in the pitch-black darkness before the dawn. I do recommend bringing a headlamp at a minimum because the path isn't lit and some folks may not be comfortable walking in the dark (I grew up in the infantry and we operated in the dark more than I wanted). I now place this on a must-do list when visiting Oahu ... you won't be...
Read morePerspective from 200+lbs hiking an uphill steep incline the whole way up. If you are not in shape, the furthest you can go without having too much breathing issues is half way point. The views leading up to the lighthouse are amazing from a high point advantage. I walked this early and light rain. Unfortunately, i did not reach the lighthouse, my feets were killing me, i made it 3/4 of way up. Next time when im alittle more in shape, ill try to complete it. It is not a far distance but the incline and winding trail leading to the lighthouse made it not so easy. I was huffing and puffing the whole way. I saw families with strollers and young children make it up, and others did not. I do not recommend doing this in the sunny heat, if you are overweight. Enjoy...
