We discovered this place from a store owner in town. It was about 20 minute drive from Waikiki.
The parking was easy and it’s designed for two separate trails.
Warning: if you want to get to the Tidepools, take the unpaved trail and go downhill. The paved uphill trail takes to you to top of the mountain.
It’s about a 15 minute walk on rocky and sandy surface so make sure you wear shoes and bring everything with you. If you forget your bathing suit once you get there, it will be another 30 minute round trip.
Once you get there, there are lagoons, tidepools and small cliffs you can jump off or swim in.
There aren’t any people at this location. On average there might be 4 to 5 groups of people. If you don’t like a super crowded place, this is the spot for you.
We had a great time there and we spent two full hours there playing in the sand and water.
Definitely would recommend to anyone that wants to get away from the hustle and...
Read moreI really wanted to visit here and saw lots of rave reviews (with some warnings about the risk), but apparently the site is closed for good. If you're looking for the most up to date info, the Hawaii government website says:
"The tide pools located at Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline commonly referred to as the Makapu’u tide pools are in a CLOSED AREA and considered very dangerous. The area is known to have unpredictable wave surges that have swept people out to sea resulting in a loss of life. Furthermore, the steep and loose trail leading to the tide pools is hazardous to those on it and those below it. Please do not attempt to access the tide pools as you are putting yourself and potentially our rescue workers...
Read moreDid not do my research enough and thought it would be an easier route to the tide pools, but once you get there, it is totally worth the climb down. There's a paved path halfway up the hill, then you basically jump over a barrier and start a descent. White paint marks the way up/down if you get a little turned around. Bring water shoes if you've got them, it helps when you're in the tide pools as the rocks are either sharp and/or slippery. Gorgeous views.
Word.of caution: we went when it was overcast and misty. Perfect weather to visit. I would think that having the full sun beat down on you while you're climbing down/up makes it even more...
