Amazing staff, cool spot. John was super nice and helpful and fielded a lot of my questions.
Couple things I’d say are their ammo is pretty expensive. if you rent, then you are restricted to purchasing the ammo thats $ marked up. But if you have your own guns, then you can bring your ammo as you please, so theres the upside.
Other thing, the handguns I used were very due for a cleaning. So much carbon build up, mags were sticking and very, very hard to load up (m&p mag, glock mags was fine), mags failing to seat, mag would EJECT ITSELF after every shot off a glock 19. really wish i got this on video to add it in the review, but i just gave the gun back to the counter instantly after the mag dropped out of the magwell after 3-4 shots and me replacing it each shot to see if it will happen again, i made sure my hand was not hitting the mag release.
The M&P 2.0 that I tried out had a broken slide release spring inside or some component in that slide release system, and preventing me from using the slide release. This was discovered by the counter attendant, not just my own diagnosis. And the red dot was visibly seated crooked on frame and off zero by a significant amount, had to have that re adjusted at the counter.
All in all, i went here to test fire some handguns that I was shopping for. I left more confused on which one I wanted. Both guns I tried were not in reliable, clean, or in functioning condition for me to make my informed choice. Spent $100 to walk away still not knowing which handgun I wanted.
The place is really great though, still. This is NOT an angry customer hate-review. I simply am being transparent about my experience. Ive been here before this time, brought my cousins, we shot and had fun. But this is the second I came here, I came to test fire some guns I was interested in, and the guns were in no condition to give me clear results to make my comparison and decision on which one I should trust my family’s and my life with.
I understand the handguns go through +1,000 rounds a day, get handled constantly, etc. but that should then also warrant for much more frequent cleanings, TLC, repairs, and functions checking.
Handing over a gun to a customer that had a piece inside that is broken is pretty unsafe, it could have a catastrophic malfunction on the person.
This is up to whoever cleans the guns to be more vigilant in checking functionality, as well as the last line of defense, the person behind counter to check also real quick on all functions before finally handing the gun off.
I hope Evans Staff see this and not feel like Im just writing angry after a bad visit. This is in hopes that they see this and begin cleaning and checking their guns more often before letting people come in, spend good money, and have problems the whole way through their sessions with malfunction after malfunction.
I will be returning, thanks for whoever read this far. I just wanted to give a honest, detailed review of my visit.
That $100 btw is broken down as so:
$50 for 2 boxes of ammo (~$23 per) $20 lane rental $20 gun rental (its cool that you pay once to rent and can switch out endlessly, but then you end up forking over extra $ for the ammo thats marked up by 100% compared to turners for example) Taxes
Its still pretty affordable in comparison to other spots, I guess i just had some bad luck on this visit with the guns being in not so good shape, making that $ not produce me results in terms of testing & comparing.
Thats all. Peace. Stay...
Read moreIt is not a bad firing range, if you are specifically here for pistol ammunition. Got my FSC here which was a fast process. Was trained in firearm safety by Joseph who is one of the best firearm instructors I have ever worked with. But overall the firing range gets blown out by FT3 in every possible way (cleanliness, ventilation, number of lanes, allows rifle calibers, onsite shooting instructor, and surprisingly even price). Buying a firearm from here is highly not recommended. Talked on the phone with an employee, told me I could do FFL transfers from online. Went through the process only for the Evans employee to call and say "the rifle safe is full"? This has not been a problem at any other firearm store I have ever been to. The people at Riflegear looked at me puzzled when I asked if they had enough room in their safe. During my first firearm purchase here, they actually lost my rifle in the back and took an hour of back and forward phone calls between two employees (one off shift, one on shift) to find it. Kept referring me as "that asian guy" while they were looking for my firearm, which was strange since my friend who has purchased from here was not referred to as "that white guy" but by his name instead. The original packaging for the rifle was also lost along with the manual and other accessory parts which had to be repurchased separately. They were nice enough to throw it into a cheap rifle case for me to take. Overall its not bad range if you live close, good amount of street parking, and can shoot pistol calibers anytime. Staff is hit and miss but that is essentially any business. If you are looking to purchase a firearm, avoid this place...
Read moreCaveat to the review, I’m from LA so I’m not sure if the OC has certain polices i’m not aware of.
I never leave reviews but felt like I needed to in this case. My time is VERY limited as a law student and was wasted going to this range. I called and was told there was no wait time to shoot, and they also confirmed they sell ammo. I SPECIFICALLY asked about 9mm ammo and was quoted a price, leading me to reasonably believe I can purchase ammo at the range. I had brought 2 forms of ID as well.
I showed up and there was a waitlist. Of course it’s reasonable that in the meantime other customers would’ve come in. However I waited almost an hour in my car before I could even shoot. They give unlimited time per lane so you never know how long your wait will be.
When it was finally my turn I asked about buying home defense ammo to take home, and they said they only sell range ammo in bulk, which is ridiculous. Who buys 500 rounds of range ammo? Been to multiple ranges in LA and this was never the case. Told myself that in all fairness they’re not a gun store they’re a shooting range, so I was disappointed but still wanted to shoot.
Finally, I asked for eye and ear protection and was told they don’t rent those out and I had to buy my own. Once again, every range I’ve been to in LA County provided eyes and ears for their shooters, I’ve never been to a range that hasn’t. Due to a recent move I didn’t have my gear on me and thus couldn’t even shoot.
Friendly employees but this experience was very disappointing and a huge waste of time. You’d think the OC would have better ranges given the relatively conservative culture, but this was not the case in...
