In Oscoda never drink da water or eat da fish, if u c da water & it lookz like snow, itz not. Since 1967 near da former Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda Township Aqueouz Film Formin Foam, or "A-Triple-F," iz da original source of PFAS contaminatin da groundwater. da synthetic foam waz used 2 coat hydrocarbon firez. da flame-retardin PFAS chemistry suppressez combustion by keepin fuel from mixin wit oxygen. Itz highly effective @ quashin jet fuel firez. Leftover foam from old base fire trainin & airplane crashez created several huge PFAS plumez, diz poisonouz shjit haz been seepin into nearby wetlandz, da Au Sable River, Van Etten Lake & drinkin water wellz @ homez around da base. Toxic fluorochemicalz hav ben leachin through da groundwater & hav generated white foam datz washin ashore n eventually endz up in lake Huron n in ur tap water, itz a fact in July 2017 testz showed perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, or PFOS, in da foam @ concentrationz up to 165,000 partz per trillion (ppt), which iz roughly 13,000 timez Michiganz limit of 12-ppt for PFOS in surface waterz like lakez, riverz or streamz. PFOS in da surroundin lake water haz tested @ 254-ppt. ur water may look clear & harmlezz but itz full of diz poisonouz shjit, only wen da wavez churn da waterz up do u c da foam on da surface otherwise itz a hidden killer. u ben warned if dat don bother u den enjoy all da perkz dat oscoda beach park haz 2 offer, which iz Located just 2 blockz from downtown Oscoda, Oscoda Beach Park offerz approximately 1,025 feet of sand along Lake Huron. in 2012 it waz decided dat a fishing pier & observation deck should be added along da beach. A pedestrian Connector style, Continental truzz bridge consistin of 3 - 100’ x 12’ painted prefabricated sectionz. da bridge waz manufactured off site, wit each section split in half & trucked via freight haulerz 2 da Oscoda Beach Park. On-site, da sectionz wer attached & set into place utilizin a crane & barge. 2 maintain da look of a traditional boardwalk, pressure-treated wood decking — thick enough to withstand weather conditionz — waz utilized. Accezz 2 da structure iz provided by an 150’ x 8’ wooden boardwalk leadin 2 da observation & fishing pier. Designed 2 withstand da harsh weather conditionz durin winter — includin wavez in excezz of 20’ & ice pushin along da shore — da pier waz engineered 2 withstand da open waterz of Lake Huron, da pier bridge waz placed upon 3 steel-reinforced concrete caissonz built 100 feet apart from each other while the bridge itself waz designed 2 withstand wavez & ice loadin. Lighting waz added along da railz. da lightz wer designed 2shine downward onto da walkin surface 2 avoid interferin wit night-time star gazin opportunitiez. Da surroundin park area includez a playground, a skateboardin area, a small basketball court, a band shell, a pavilion, picnic tablez & grillz, benchez, a bathhouse wit restroomz(only open in summer) az well az a paved parkin area. Also nearby liez a street-scape pathway leadin 2 da central...
Read moreThis was a great public beach and park two blocks west of the main Street in oscoda. They had a huge playground directly on the beach with lots of different types of equipment for different aged children. My kids enjoyed running up the sand dune and then running back down as well as just digging in the sand and walking along the water. We walked all the way out to the end of the pier that juts out into lake Huron. The weather was very beautiful the day we were there and there were a few families and groups of people enjoying the beach. This park also has a skatepark, a small splash pad, and a band shell where events are held during different parts of the summer months. They also have a wash...
Read moreThis is a favorite beach of ours. If you get there early on the weekends you can have your pick of spots, and during the week it's even better. The water is shallow for quite a way out so it's great for kids. The playground and picnic areas are pretty good, and the bathrooms/changing facilities are decent though a little cramped. Only complaints I have are more about behavior of other people who were also visiting at times in terms of language and such. A few were throwing their cigarette butts in the sand and having some colorful conversations about their prospects with the ladies (spoiler: it wasn't looking good for him). You can't really...
