Montara State Beach is a beach located in the coastal region of California eight miles north of Half Moon Bay on State Route 1 in California, USA. It is operated by the California State Department of Parks and Recreation under the San Mateo Coast Sector Office. It is one of the cleanest beaches in the state and is known for surfing and fishing.

There are two beach access points. Dogs are allowed on-leash (6 ft. maximum). Fireworks and fires are not permitted.

There are bike, hiking, and horseback trails. The Devil's Slide is at the north end of the beach and the trail starts from a beach parking lot.A lighthouse operated as a hostel is part of the state park.

The 690-acre McNee Ranch, on Montara Mountain, encompasses coastal mountain habitat and has sweeping views of the coast. The ranch's two-mile Pedro Mountain Trail connects to trails leading to Montara Beach and Gray Whale Cove.

The first European land exploration of Alta California, the Spanish Portolà expedition, camped in this area on October 30, 1769, possibly at Martini Creek, which reaches the sea at Montara beach (Bolton says San Vicente Creek, farther south). Beach is gorgeous and not busy. Me and my family went to spend a relaxing time and enjoy the gorgeous waters. We love this beach and been coming in here for quite sometime. However, our last visit was ruined by this white male maybe around his 50s and drives black Toyota Tacoma. It seems like he lives in the neighborhood as per him and maybe watching beach goers activities. When we were leaving the area, he approached us in the parking lot. He was cussing and borderline harassing my husband and accusing him that he’s catching dungeness crab at the beach because he was holding a net in the water. He’s perception is all wrong as a matter of fact my husband is not catching Dungeness crabs but rock crab which is open season all year round, he even have fishing permit ( he didn’t even catch any that day due to high tide). He’s very rude and throwing F words while yelling around my son who’s 4 years old. We even told him that we’re not doing anything that he’s saying and accusing us of however he didn’t even let us talk and explained. He did really ruined our day....
