It is with a heavy heart that I write this and I hadn't planned on it until my son got injured with the ridiculously dangerous fireworks show last night. If you have kids, do not bring them here until something drastic changes. This track is the most mismanaged and dangerous I’ve ever been to. Aside from the hazardous waste and roach infestation in the bathrooms, this track is just one mishap away from killing someone.
I remember coming to Sunshine Speedway every weekend as a kid and it was absolutely amazing. Last night was the first time I was able to take my own kids and we will not be back. This track is dangerous not only for the drivers but spectators as well. I remember when there was an ambulance on site and multiple fire extinguishing trucks that would race onto the track to help drivers within seconds of a bad accident.
Last night was a horrific accident and there was barely any hustle from the track team to respond. Not a single one got out an extinguisher until a driver finally managed to jump out yelling fire and ran to the grass to roll himself out. Even then, only one employee on the track went over to help him out. The driver was pissed. I don't blame him.
The fireworks display in many words was yes "awesome". And also awesomely dangerous. When they started going off 10-20' from the ground and then landing in the crowds, that was just the beginning. The cardboard shrapnel rained for about 15 minutes. During the entire show, the crowd was facing away because of all the embers and particles being blasted into the air. They used to have the trucks launch the fireworks up on the back hill which would have been twice the distance to the crowd. How in the world are they getting away with doing these so close is beyond me. There were employees on the track just feet from these truck beds. After my son got a hot ember in his eye, we decided to move behind the bleachers and watched as hot ashes fell on cars all over the parking lot.
The special event last night had regular pricing posted ($15/adult, kids under 12 free) until just a few hours before the event, then suddenly at the booth, it's now ($20/adult, $5/kid). Not a big deal, but terrible business decision considering we actually called to ask what the pricing was beforehand the day of and checked the website and were told the regular rate. We also brought a limited amount of cash for food and drinks that was now spent. It's cash only and I can see why they don't want the worry of any complaints with the credit card merchants.
I get the bathrooms may be disgusting at a race track. I expect that to be honest, but these haven’t been cleaned in probably over a year. Washing your hands with soap that has 20 roaches in it is beyond unsanitary. A photo is worth a thousand words. The concessions back up to the bathrooms. I can only imagine what that looks like. We didn’t order any more food after seeing the bathrooms.
I also understand that wrecks happen and that is also to be expected, but every track should have safety as their #1 priority. Read the other reviews from drivers at this track and you’ll see this is not a one-off incident. The cost of hiring an ambulance on site for a night to save lives is invaluable. This place needs to be shut down or a change of management that actually cares about this track as a business and not their personal playground. If you've never been to a race before, go to another track and see the difference before...
Read moreIt's coming along but still needs improvements. It's great to see it back in action and the new improvements verse a year+ ago is good and needed. The track is decent. I was a long time fan of Sunshine and lived thy here on Saturday nights
Bathroom had plenty of toilet paper and was fairly clean. The newer seating is much appreciated, the old seats were rusted and falling apart. I saw many who brought their own lawn chairs and wished I did too.
Please send the 50/50 people around the stands I had $20 and kept looking for the ticket person to walk by my section of stands. I had to finally go looking for where they were sold. I didn't win, which was ok u wanted to give back to the track.
The one biggest complaint is their food and drink stations. Way to slow. When there is a mob of people, in a captured audience, who actually want to support your business and buy from you then the stations should have been prepped and drinks ready to go. Think fast food, get the grills going, get the fries down, have drink poured and ready to go. When patrons have to stand in line 30 minutes and miss the show it does not reflect well on the overall management.
Don't get me wrong, hopefully the food /drink stations will improve, if not there isn't a reason to return. Part of the excitement of watching the races is having a cold beer and a burger.
Please take this into consideration, I would love to return when I hear this...
Read moreMy husband and I attended the speedway last weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We'd never been to any race together and neither one of us had been to this particular track. There is plenty of parking and free at that. There are ear plugs you can purchase at the front gate for a dollar which was so helpful. The staff are super friendly and the food at the concession stand is really good and reasonably priced. There are plenty of seats in the grandstands and we could see everything perfectly. The races were so exciting and I love that there were several different styles of race cars/trucks throughout the event. Admission tickets were $15 for regular night racing and it's $30 for specialty events (4th of July etc.) Very reasonable!! It was also a surprise that the race car drivers do a free autograph and photo opportunity during an intermission. They all came down by the concession stand and lined up at a long table allowing the audience to come and get a photo card with an autograph. Also got a few pics as well. What an amazing experience! You can also pay extra to do a tailgate situation on the backstretch where you can bring food and drinks. Back your truck up to the track and party on!! We will definitely be returning and hopefully on a regular basis. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a high intensity and exciting adventure to go and watch. Thanks Showtime for such a wonderful and memorable...
