The massive Commons Room is breathtaking - but do remember it's most likely being used, as it is still a functioning study hall. Be respectful.
Spend the extra bucks ($4 per person, you get a key that unlocks the doors) and take the pre-recorded tour that includes ALL thirty of the accessible Nationality Rooms, even if you don't use the recording. They're impressive, not simply for the fact that they are actually used as functioning classrooms when the university is in session (can't tour the rooms when they're in use during the week), but for the remarkable decor, detail, and effort that has gone into each room. And if you're there around the Christmas holidays, the Nationality Rooms are decorated in that country's traditional way. Even nicer.
The view from the upper floor (2nd floor, but it's way up there) down into the Commons Room is amazing, as is the (little known secret here) view from the 36th floor observation windows.
There's snack bars and food in the basement, check the website for hours of operation.
Most definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. If you're not in the area, make your way over there anyways. Spend the full day (it will take the entire day, too) touring the Cathedral of Learning, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and the...
Read moreThis building, conveniently located so that you can see it for miles, is a work of art that cannot be missed. The intricacy and craftsmanship that went into the construction of this grand tower will leave you awestruck. Enter the main floor to experience what may be the closest you will ever feel, aside from universal studios, to being in Hogwarts. Huge gothic archways and cozy cubbies will remind you of the fantastical school, especially when filled by University of Pittsburgh students studying away at all hours.
Visit the classrooms of different countries and get a one-of-a- kind taste of diversity that will teach you lots, and please your eyes. Head up to the 36th floor for a panoramic view of Pittsburgh that stretches for miles.
Great to spend a few hours at least in this historical structure, and visit Heinz Chapel across the courtyard if you have a moment for towering stained glass windows and intricate...
Read moreI've traveled a decent amount and this is still one of the most gorgeous buildings I've ever been to. A beautiful gothic gem, standing high over Oakland, it catches your eye no matter how many times you've seen it. Touring the building alone would be amazing. Add in the Nationality Rooms and you have a unique, unforgettable day ahead of you. The rooms are all designed to look as authentic as possible. They have real items from those countries with nice paragraphs explaining them. They host a holiday open house each year and it's an event I would hate to miss. It's PACKED but you still have room to explore everything there is to offer. Each room is decorated in that country's winter holiday with a volunteer in traditional dress that explains how each country celebrates. The great hall has performances and food that is to die for. This is key for anyone...
