I want to preface my review by saying that I rarely leave bad reviews and we are generally very easy to please, especially with hotels. We don’t expect much at all, but this was a new level of unacceptable. We checked in very late at night, while on a road trip vacation, only to be told that the room we booked using Marriot points isn’t available. The room we got was a major downgrade but they insisted they can’t refund the difference because we booked with points Additionally we were mistakenly charged for 2 nights instead of 1, and once again we couldn’t get it refunded without spending hours on the phone with Marriot.
The room was small but that was the least of the problems. Thankfully we brought our own blankets because the linen on the bed, besides being creased, was literally filthy!! 1000% used! There was crumbs and stains on the bottom sheet!! So disgusting 🤢 But being that it was late at night we used the linen we brought along and tried to go to sleep, only to discover the next issue. The room was extremely warm and no matter how many times we tried to shut the heat and run the air conditioning, the room kept getting hot again and we could barely sleep Additionally there were a bunch of weird bleach stains on the lampshade, holes in the furniture, and so on. The shower looked nice and worked well but the soaps were really gross. Almost fishy smelling. If all that wasn’t bad enough, we had an antisemitic encounter on our way out. Granted it wasn’t the hotels fault… an African American couple were sitting in the hotel’s restaurant/bar eating and laughing loudly and when we (clearly religious Jewish looking couple) walked past them, at first they just gave us nasty stares. Then, when we passed by them again, the man clearly and pointedly said to us, TWICE: ‘Serial killers! Serial killers!’ (I figure he was making reference to the war in the Middle East, although I’m unsure how that makes us, a Jewish American couple minding our business, killers? 🤔)
I do have something nice to add. We mistakenly left a garment bag behind in the closet in our room. By the time we noticed we were in another hotel in another state about 2 hours away and we desperately needed that bag of clothes for a wedding that night. When we called the Oaklander, the woman who answered the phone was very nice and understanding. She ran to our room and took the bag to the front desk and handed it over to our Uber driver who was there a couple of minutes later to pick it up & bring it to us. Some of the other staff that we encountered during our stay were also very nice and friendly.
Additionally the decor in the hotel’s public areas is really nice with beautiful added holiday decorations. The restaurant and bar/lounge are really pretty too and tastefully furnished and decorated (but the floor was very dirty.) We didn’t eat there so I can’t speak for the food
Overall though, while Pittsburgh is a beautiful quaint and richly historic city full of beautiful views, this was definitely not a good experience for a hotel that’s considered a luxury high end place. Wayyy too expensive for what...
Read moreAs a Marriott platinum member, I was disappointed at what was supposed to be a four-star hotel. I had stayed here previously and did not have any problems whatsoever, but this week-long visit was one thing after another. Some things might seem petty, but when you've traveled to Marriott properties for years, you come to expect a level of excellence and consistency. I have only complained two other times where there were insect problems on the properties, on the higher floors nonetheless. |On day one, arriving at the Oaklander, we found that the desk chair in our room still had food crumbs in it and what appeared to be pet hair all over it. Keep in mind that this is a pet-friendly hotel, and if you are not into sleeping where other people's animals' pet dander, hair, and rear ends have been on the carpet and furniture, then I'd find a hotel where pets are not allowed. I find it quite disgusting, but that's strictly my opinion. |Room service came up and vacuumed the chair for us, but we still placed a towel over it as it appeared to be stained. On different days, you received different surprises with room service. Some days, they took the towels; another day, they took the towels and didn't leave any; another day, they left their cleaning rag between the shower and the sink; also, on the the first evening, we found out the body wash was empty. We typically hang our towels up to reuse them from a common sense and environmental standpoint. The majority of Marriott hotels ask if you want to keep your towels to hang them up. You never knew what you would walk into later in the evening. |Thursday morning was probably the biggest thing to happen that has never happened at a Marriott property for me and the main reason why I decided to go ahead and list all of the inconsistencies. We got ready to go out for the day, and the perfume my daughter had just purchased from Wildcard Gift Shop two days before was missing. We both knew what was in the brown bag, which was kept on the desk in the room placed up against the wall. We searched everywhere for it and did not find it. We even looked in the trashcan that had not been emptied from the day before. We know mistakes can happen, but where the bag was placed, there was no reason for anyone to think it was trash and to discard it unless they were going through all of the items on the desk. Unfortunately, with this many problems, that was our last stay at the Oaklander. My daughter asked why I stayed there in the first place, and I told her that I had a great experience with the Oaklander a couple of years ago. |I went to the hotel website to send this message and concerns to their team, but there is nowhere on the website to contact them via email. There are also lots of hotels in the University of...
