Small museum with a lot information about Calhoun County-history. The museum has different small sections each one refers about specific times on Calhoun county. It has a section about the natives, about the french settlement , the Spanish settlement, about the lifestyle in the last century, a model how it was Indianola, about the light house, etc. Plus personal staff is friendly and well prepared to answer doubts. Many artifacts were donated by local families. It is lovely to see how they want to preserve their history.Thank you for sharing. Hopefully in a future they can have a bigger space for so much valuable information.

Great relics from WW2, Native American tribes, French explorers, Union and Confederate soldiers, etc. Small gift shop with Calhoun County books and postcards. SEE PHOTOS. This is off the beaten path and not too well marked. No charge and free parking, but donations are accepted.

Excellent, small museum with history from pre European exploration thru WW2. Unique artifacts from LaSalle’s ship, native Americans, civil war, and westward expansion. Our guide provided a great tour taking us around and covering the highlights of the museum and local area.

Calhoun County Museum in Port Lavaca, TX

I had an absolutely wonderful experience visiting the Calhoun County Museum in Port Lavaca. Located at 301 S Ann St, this museum is a hidden gem that beautifully encapsulates the rich and diverse history of the Gulf Coast region. From the moment you step in, you are greeted with a plethora of fascinating exhibits. The eight-foot diorama of 19th-century Indianola is a highlight, offering a detailed and immersive view of the area’s past. The Fresnel lens from the 1852 Matagorda Lighthouse is another standout piece, showcasing the incredible maritime history of the region. One of the most enriching aspects of my visit was learning about the early Polish settlers in the area.

The museum does an excellent job of highlighting the contributions of these settlers to the development of Texas. Polish immigrants arrived in the mid-19th century, first landing in Indianola, a major port at the time, before moving inland to establish settlements such as Panna Maria. They played a crucial role in developing the agricultural landscape of Texas, transforming vast lands into productive farms and ranches. Their resilience and hard work significantly shaped the region's development.

Additionally, visitors can purchase the book "First Polish Americans" at the museum, which provides a detailed account of these settlers' journeys and contributions to Texas. The museum also features intriguing displays on shipwrecks, LaSalle’s expedition, and the tragic hurricane that devastated Indianola in 1886. These exhibits are not only educational but also deeply engaging, bringing history to life in a compelling way.

I was also delighted to learn about the historic Beach Hotel, a symbol of the town’s enduring spirit. The story of this landmark, which has survived numerous hurricanes, is a testament to the resilience of Port Lavaca and its residents.

Overall, the Calhoun County Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of the Gulf Coast. The exhibits are well-curated, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the museum provides a rich, educational experience that is both enjoyable and enlightening.

Much bigger than it appears from the outside, the collections span a wide variety of local history. Ample information about Indianola, which is handy since the town is no longer. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask the volunteers - the good lady operating the museum while I visited was incredibly knowledgeable about all things Port Lavaca and Calhoun County. I left with a much deeper appreciation...
