Dorothea Dix Park is one of the best places to relax, walk, and enjoy nature in Raleigh. The open green spaces are perfect for a picnic, a peaceful stroll, or flying a kite with the kids. The views of the downtown skyline, especially during sunset, are simply beautiful.
I visited during the summer sunflower season and it was stunning—fields full of bright yellow flowers made the perfect photo spot. The park also has a large dog area, plenty of space for sports or running, and some shaded picnic areas. It’s clean, safe, and never too crowded.
One of the highlights is the new Gipson Play Plaza—it’s great for families with kids, with creative playgrounds and splash zones. There are also hammocks, swings, and walking trails throughout the park.
Parking is easy and free on weekends. It’s also great for biking or jogging, and they often have public events, yoga, and art displays.
Overall, Dorothea Dix Park is a peaceful escape right in the city. Whether you’re looking for quiet time or outdoor fun with family and friends, this park has something for everyone. Definitely...
Read more+1 to amazing things you can don in summer in Raleigh! This year they had sunflower fest in first week of July. This place was full of crowd and enjoyments. They had bus service from NC state centennial campus and parking was provided free in any cemetennial campus parking lot of NC State University. Volunteers were there everywhere to help people visiting. At festiv location there were tons of food trucks and even beer trucks. We could enjoy our favorite Trophie brewing here. Sunflower garden was too lit. As you can see pics, it was too pretty. Many people were having great time with their partners and fur partners. They even had live music playing in grouond and some games were put for enjoyment. ** there was no free water! Had to pay 10 bucks in cash for 3 small water bottles, not sure if that person looted us or that was the rate. Good lesson to carry water with you...

Sunflowers in some parts of the field were wilted I'm sure because of heat but they were many great spots.
We stayed about an hr. The sunflowers are a great backdrop for some pictures. The had some other spots had to take pics. There is also a huge over sized couch with fabric that looks like grass. It's placed in front of The sunflower field. The line up was pretty long but makes for great pictures.
I'd definitely recommend a look if you can...
