Located in downtown Rapid City, between 6th and 7th and Main and St. Joseph. Art alley consists of dumpsters, utility meters and the backs of the buildings on both sides covered in street Art and graffiti. This unique area was established in 2003, giving artists the freedom to express personal and political views through art. Its an outdoor gallery of a wide variety of styles and subject matter. Although some people are put off by the initial view of the alley, keep in mind, it is an alley that runs behind fully functioning businesses on both sides. The dumpters and utility meters are being utilized, but have been incorporated into the public art space. Permits must be obtained and certain rules do apply for artists to create here, but, the Permits are free and are fairly easy to obtain. This ensures a constant change to the Art on display. I make a point to stroll Art alley every single time I am in the area. It truly is a...
Read moreLet me tell you this: it's not an extremely magical place because it's an alleyway with graffiti. However, it was pretty awesome. There was abstract art, regular graffiti, spray portraits, and a whole bunch. If you're an artist, I would definitely reccomend this place, but you need a permit to paint there. I'm not completely sure if there's a cost for an amount of space. It changes every now and then, so make sure to look at everything you can and appreciate what you get, because you may not get the chance to see it again. Would definitely reccomend for family outings and photography, although every once in a while, you'd see a little profanity sprayed on the walls. Still a great place for people who want to walk in Rapid City for...
Read moreIt was a nice place to walk through there is some amazing artwork to look at. Although I would suggest some caution. I was traveling with a niece and as two ladies alone we were immediately approached by an "artist" who wanted to lay claim to about 90% of the artwork only to end our guided tour with a request for money. I was polite but caught a couple of the other artist snickering as he tried to tour us through the alley. I have a feeling he may not have been an artist who did all that painting but more interested in a financial gain. But, it is very pretty and tastefully done, not just graffiti with no meaning and not any vulgarity,...
