While the museum is well thought out for the most part, as a disabled 75 year old woman I found the staff grossly unsympathetic. My issue is a very bad back and wide spread pain. After about an hour of walking around the museum with my sister and her grands, I asked the girl at the front desk if I could sit a few in a chair that was adjusted to a height I could access. She asked me to sit on a wooden folding chair which was at the same height as the benches placed randomly around the museum. I told her that they were too low and that I would not be able to get up if I sat there. She made the excuse that the chair I asked about was for the front desk clerk who had just gone to lunch. ( If she had just left for what was probably a half hour to an hour lunch, would it have made any difference if I had been allowed to sit for five or ten minutes while my sister and the kids continued to enjoy the exhibits?) I thanked the young girl for not being helpful and left the museum letting my sister know I had to leave because apparently this museum is not disabled friendly and couldn't care less if their elderly disabled patrons had...
Read moreDo not waste your money on the Combo Ghost tour! I purchased 4 tickets at $25 (member price) apiece for my husband’s birthday. We went with our daughters. Well let me say what a ridiculously terrible “tour” I don’t know if it was training day for a tour guide position, but this chick sucked!!! She read off script that she couldn’t even stick to, not that it mattered as it was filled with rumors from so and so but nothing actually substantiated as far as paranormal activity. I corrected her when she pointed out Sandy McGee’s. She never mentioned it was a pharmacy at one time, nor did she mention the man and nurse that has been seen upstairs. When I told her she said “it’s not in my papers” She never faced us when speaking, she faces the buildings so no one could hear her. We left immediately after the first part of the tour! I would have given the tour with knowledge/history/facts/, and made it interactive and fun for the attendees. Shame on them for not doing a simple job correctly. Save...
Read moreA surprisingly thoughtful and well rounded museum! The gallery exhibit is full of concise, well designed displays that tell multiple sides of Fort Bend's settlement and political history. The houses are interesting time capsules, with several eras of class ambitions captured in layers of renovations. The tour narrative is honest in explaining the lifestyles of the historical families within the context of racism, but without reducing the people to only that aspect. I half expected this museum to be focused on specifically white accomplishments and culture, but with Fort Bend being the most ethnically diverse county in America (as measured in 2017), the museum is striving to widen it's stories.
We learned a whole lot, and it was a very well spent...
