I have been shopping at the Great Wall market for a few years, the NY Mart is a little closer and I started going there for a while. Until last month. I went in and purchased a few things including what I thought was the real Sriracha, the bottle looked about right and it had "Original" on the label. When i got home, I tasted it, I was surprised how salty it was, not like the one I was used to. I looked at the label again and saw it was a different brand. I also saw the sodium content and it was nearly 3 times the amount per serving that the original Sriracha. I had other imitation srirachas before in the last couple of years and I have no problem with different sriracha flavors but this one was not edible. I took it back to the store to get credit so I can buy the original brand which they carried but at a different isle from the many srirachas (that's how I think I missed getting the right one the first time). I went to the customer service counter and told one person what I was trying to do. She had difficulty understanding me and also raising her voice a little (which is not problem with me, maybe a language barrier, I thought). She called the "manager", a twenty something fella who exchanged some words with her before coming to me and asking for the receipt. I told him I had no receipt (I don't keep them, especially for food purchases days after). I was able to show him from my credit card app that I made a purchase at their store 3 days ago and another four charges at the same store within a month's time. I explained that I did not want money, just credit to buy the original brand sriracha. He kept on repeating that no receipt no refund. He appeared that he had many unusual requests in the recent past because he continued looking at me as if I was trying to pull a trick on him. I left the bottle with them and left. Went to Great Wall and got what I was looking for. Of course I will not step in NY mart again. They are not a mom-and-pop little store and should have a better...
Read moreWow..... This place felt like it's going under but manages to keep surviving. What's more, I just discovered a new food counter that is quite nice to see. Could this be a point where it turns itself around??.... I really do hope so.
Among a newcomer counter to the store is the new (somewhat small) Chinese medicine counter which by the way offers Chinese medicine at a price cheaper than crazy Amazon [and for all the useful medicinal items I needed in the picture below]. So this should deserve a star all by itself so we are not subject to the prices under Amazon's monopoly pricing.
I'm disappointed that the pastry-bread stall closed; however I'm just shocked at the street food available. It isn't the best but it definitely felt like street food for sure (the yummy good kind too)! So I'm hopeful, I'm full from eating there, and I bought takeout enough to feed myself for 3 days because there's simply no food like TW street food near where I live at all.
NOTE amenities (e.g. bathroom, sitting area) leave a lot to be desired but I don't go there for the bathroom, chair or table. So here's 4 stars and a lot of hope that things will...
Read moreproducts are okay, not as variety as gw supermarket. But the worst part is customer service. They accused me of lying about a return, when i did no such thing. It was seriously disrespectful and dishonoring. They jumped to conclusion. I opened a kao body soap and probably used a few drops, but did not suit me, when i returned the item, the lady was suggesting to her colleague that i bought it only so i can use it and return it and get money back, that was one of the most disrespectful experiences of my whole life, because honestly the soap did not suit me, and to be accused of lying when i was telling the truth, was seriously disrespectful. I don't know if it is a cultural thing, but how did they think they knew what was in my heart, or what actually happened, forming wrong conclusions based on assumptions and then to actually believe your false assumptions are absolutely true and using those to dishonor someone. Seriously...
