This trail is no joke but it’s not difficult. Almost 10 miles completed in 3 hours. Mostly flat with some hills and curves and creeks but pretty level. We didn’t know the trail was that long and every time we thought to turn around, we figured we were almost done and kept going. We did have bottled water but didn’t bring snacks. Fortunately we found lots to talk about. Depending on the weather you could need to cross a few slightly elevated creeks. Usually rocks are there but still be careful crossing. Be mindful of bikes as well or roll around bends quickly and often without you hearing or seeing them. Wear good shoes. I appreciated that despite the heat, there was a lot of shade to cover us. I probably won’t ever walk this trail again but it was definitely a wonderful accomplishment I didn’t prepare for. I prefer more visual sights for a long trek and I can get that from an early walk around Downtown DC through the monuments to Georgetown and back. It’s all preference but it was nice to check out this beautiful park and trail in Prince George’s County. I hope you find this review helpful. If so, please give me a thumbs...
Read moreThis state park contains a well-marked dirt trail for hiking, horseback riding, or mountain biking. The Outer Perimeter Trail is approximately 9 miles of a loop in the wooded forest, with a couple of good hills but mostly bumpy ups and downs. It is not at all rocky. A few places can get muddy, but it does dry out quickly. Parking is not free, it is $4 for out-of-staters and $3 for local residents per visit. There is a public restroom, and also some smaller hikes for bird watching and farming education. It is a quiet park, there aren't too many people visiting, so you may even have the trail to yourself on a weekday. I really like this park for trail running, I come here...
Read moreFun, flowing fast 10 mile loop of single track... nice canopy providing shade during the hot swampy DC area summers. Not technical in the least, some elevation change to get the heart rate up but you're rewarded with some nice smooth rolling descents (overall a great intermediate trail).
My only complaint is that the trails are bi-directional which means you can't go as fast as the trail's potential and there are plenty of blind curves (my recommendation: switch trail directions based on odd/even days). Trails are shared with hikers and equestrians alike. So, you gotta be on your toes.
$3 for MD residents, $4 out of state -worth it as they keep theses trails in...
