Please be cautious about the safety of children at this library location! Over the past month or two I have been targeted by a library patron who has reservations about my transgender identity. I mind my own business and do what I do at the library, and this person has gone as far as trying to attack me physically in the presence of library staff and management in the past, yet this gentleman is still granted access to the library, which I find concerning for a few reasons, one being that this library claims to be a safe space for LGBTQ people, and also because children are invited to this library on a regular basis for a homework help program! I don't think it's appropriate to allow those who show violent tendencies into spaces where children may witness and be the victim of such violence, and I think parents should be weary. I also don't think any adult or child should be forced to endure bullying and potential violence, especially when all they are doing is minding their business using the library how it is intended. I don't blame the library staff for the behavior of this individual, but I do think their willingness to overlook these violent tendencies to be problematic and this could be a dangerous situation for vulnerable populations. I'm very disappointed, I have been a library patron for this library for at least a year, but I no longer...
Read moreThis is a nice library, with ample room to sit in a chair or at a table and use the internet. Also has a nice patio outside. HOWEVER, like all public libraries, it does NOT enable equal access by the disabled. As someone living with chemical sensitivities, I am usually unable to access this lovely library due to lack of air filtration. Once a lot of people are in this place, it is too filled with fragrance & chemicals too much to tolerate. Since ONE IN THREE people worldwide report experiencing daily symptoms due to exposure to fragrance and other chemicals, you'd think by now that public facilities could at least provide a "clean room," where the air was filtered, for those with allergies, asthma, and other conditions that cause reaction to fragrance, if not update their systems so that the entire library was useable. Get with it city council persons! We need clean air to breathe!!! I also want to say that I think the staff treats patrons very poorly at times, especially if one happens to fall asleep while reading. I once saw them scare a poor old man nearly to death while curtly awakening him. I think he almost wet himself. I do not think sleeping people should be treated so abruptly. I have other complaints about staff as well but the main thing is lack of access due to poor air...
Read moreWhen an institution is run by people who lack integrity, the burden falls on the public to stay two steps ahead.
The Kearny Mesa Library has made it clear that cleanliness and safety are no longer a priority. Exhibit A: this muffin (photo attached) has been sitting on the same desk for over a week—untouched, ignored, and decaying. Exhibit B: the towel I used to wipe down the public keyboard. This is the filth being left for the next user to touch.
Meanwhile, theft is increasing, and the library now claims it "can’t afford security." Yet somehow, they also refuse to release full public records detailing exactly how much money they receive and where it’s going.
As I continue requesting the financial records this library is required by law to make public, I’ll also continue asking one simple question: Where is the money going if not to basic safety and hygiene?
The people of Serra Mesa and Kearny Mesa deserve real answers—not excuses, not silence, and certainly...
