If you havenât been to Tarun Lake yet, youâre seriously missing out on one of San Joseâs most underrated gems. Hidden in the peaceful, tree-lined heart of Evergreen, this place is like stepping into a Bob Ross paintingâexcept better, because there are real ducks. And not just any ducks. Weâre talking majestic mallards, cinnamon teals, and the occasional mysterious hybrid waddling around like they own the place (because honestly, they do).
The lake itself is more than just a body of waterâitâs an experience. A short, sweet walking loop (less than a mile with zero elevation gain) wraps gently around the lake, giving you a lazy stroll thatâs equal parts relaxing and picturesque. Whether youâre out on a solo think-walk, an early morning jog, or just sitting on one of the many benches soaking in that good sunshine, this place delivers pure peace. Itâs lowkey perfect for people-watching, duck-watching, and straight-up vibe-catching.
And speaking of ducksâoh my god. The ducks are the soul of Tarun Lake. They waddle, they quack, they paddle like feathered royalty, and if youâre lucky, youâll catch a duckling parade that will instantly melt whatever stress you brought with you. The community even brings seed (no bread, pleaseârespect the duck diet) to feed them, and it turns into the cutest, most chaotic feeding frenzy youâve ever seen.
Itâs the kind of place where the reflection of the trees on the water looks almost too perfect, like natureâs own Instagram filter. The lighting hits just right around golden hour, and if youâre into photography, birdwatching, or just absorbing Earthâs beauty, Tarun Lake slaps. And did I mention the parking is free? No entry fees, no hassleâjust you, the ducks, and some of the most peaceful moments youâll find in San Jose.
Sure, you might step in a little duck poop if youâre not watching where you walk, but thatâs just part of the charm. Itâs duck territoryâyouâre just visiting. Bring some wipes, wear dark shoes, and carry on.
Bottom line: Tarun Lake is serene, photogenic, duck-filled magic. Itâs a five-star sanctuary where Evergreen locals go to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with nature. Whether youâre here for a quick walk or a deep breath away from the noise, this lake is giving exactly what it needs to give....

Read moreA nice neighborhood pond with fountains and nice trees and grassy slopes. There are some animals such as fish, turtles, ducks. Wheelchair accessible path circumscribing about a contiguous 60% of the pond -- the other 40% of the pond has no walking path and is not accessible by the public. On an April Sunday morning around 10am it was fairly empty, which can be a nice neighborhood spot if you want some tranquility, but a few visitors started showing up by 11am.
The animals can be a draw for children. There's a huge fish that appears to be resting right next to the concrete wall in a seemingly shallow area with lots of vegetation and debris (not trash) and sticking its tail some 2 inches above water. At first it was so still for 2-3 minutes I had difficulty telling if it's a real fish or some kind of toy 𤣠once I realized it was a real fish I wondered if I was pregnant and trying to lay eggs in an area where the eggs would have more shelter and better chance of...
