Blue Mountain beach is a wonderful place to visit year around. There are stairs to access the beach so be prepared should you plan to bring large or bulky items such as wagons or coolers. The bathrooms are always well kept and orderly. South Walton County does a fantastic job keeping it all in tip top shape.
Parking can be quite difficult as there are limited spaces in the lot near the bathroom. Handicap parking is also available here. There are numerous parallel parking spots along Old Blue Mountain Road and a few along Blue Mountain Road. During high season, parking can be the most stressful part of your day here.
Lifeguards are on site during high season. If you are not familiar with the flag system, it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself before venturing out in these amazing turquoise waters. There can be rip currents even on a yellow flag day.
Be aware that the sand dunes at the back of the beach are off limits to all foot traffic. This is a protected area and help aid in beach erosion. Beautiful sugar sand is never too hot on the feet. Please be sure to fill in any holes at the end of your day that may have been dug by your group. Blue Mountain beach does have sea turtles that will come ashore at night to lay their eggs. Holes can be very difficult for turtles to navigate and can even cause them to become trapped.
There are paper trash bags for disposing of any unwanted items at the end of your stay. Trash bags are located at the bottom of most ingress / egress points. Please be sure to pick up everything when you depart for the day.
Most of all enjoy these priceless views views of the Gulf of Mexico! We hope you enjoy...
Read moreWe were so excited for our beach vacation in the Santa Rosa area. Unfortunately, the beach experience was the worst of my life. We proceeded to Blue Mountain Beach only to find a very tiny area designated as "public beach" , which was the area that our chair service was permitted to use. I am not exaggerating when I say it was a mere 60'x60' (NOT YARDS)! I even spoke with the Beach Ambassador to confirm that the area I was referring to as public was correct. She said it has been a growing problem as there are now "private beach" areas owned and operated by chair rental companies. (Our vacation rental company did not alert us to this.) So we're on the beach with our rented chairs, scattered about wherever they could be squeezed in among other umbrellas, coolers, chairs, tents, towels, etc (in the 60'x60' area) and more and more people are pouring into the space. It was so chaotic and crowded. Unfortunately, the private beach chair company adjacent to this mess required advance reservations, and we had already paid for the week with ours. The only positive is how beautiful the beach is in the evening when all of the rental chairs are removed. It was drastically different and so enjoyable. It's a shame we could not have experienced that during the day.
Suffice it to say, I will not return to this beach unless I am in a private beach area. It's hard to support the establishments though that are both trying to serve the public, but are doing it in a way that is creating real problems for those in the area hoping to enjoy a simple day...
Read moreThis was our first visit to Blue Mountain Beach. We typically visit Grayton Beach State Park (1.5 miles away) but the state park was full at 9:30 when we arrived.
Blue Mountain Beach advertises as a state park on Google Maps but it is not. There is a parking lot which fits about 20 cars with a third of it reserved for compact cars. Nearby, there is street parking with space for about 10 cars. We parked on the opposite side of the street parking on the side of the road and were NOT towed.
There is a restroom and changing room for men and women which accommodates one person at the time, or doubles as a family restroom in that it is quite spacious. Each restroom also has a baby changing station which is a nice place to lay your towels and such!
Right past the restrooms, there is one shower and a hose.
The boardwalk down to the beach is pretty steep and is NOT wheelchair accessible.
The beach is absolutely gorgeous!
My only gripe is that the hotels and resorts have reserved a large part of the beach for their guests. They have signs which denote the reserved areas for their guests but it is a bit confusing. In the end, we pitched our tent in a place apart from most people and resort umbrellas and spent a relaxing day...
