Must see location when touring or visiting the Savannah, GA area. Bonaventure Cemetery is the largest of the city’s municipal cemeteries, stretching over 160 acres. Trust me when I say there is some rich history at this cemetery coupled with some impressive and immaculate headstones. Some of which stand taller than 25+ feet! Much like a lot of Savannah, GA there is an obvious Victorian influence that drapes the cemetery which brings an unnerving beauty with it. Given the size of the cemetery there are several different touring options for visitors, ranging from golf cart tours all the way to Segway tours. These are great options for anyone wanting a tour guide to learn the rich history behind this cemetery and some of the notable people buried throughout it. However, for those wanting to walk the cemetery at their own pace, there is free visitor parking and guests are allowed to freely walk the entirety of the cemetery. My wife and I chose this option as we decided to visit the cemetery last minute, but if we were to go again we would definitely sign up for one of the organized tours for a few different reasons. 1. We walked around for about an hour and a half and only seen about 15% of the entire cemetery. 2. We had so many questions about some of the tombstones and headstones that we had to leave unanswered. Either way, any visit to Bonaventure Cemetery is sure to be a remarkable one, BUT be prepared to wear comfortable shoes if you are not participating in a ride along tour option as it requires a GREAT deal of walking. P.S. I normally would upload pictures for any of my reviews, but it did not feel particularly respectful to be taking pictures at a destination such as this. My own...

Read moreFree tours first weekend of the month by great volunteers.
The volunteers are so friendly and helpful. There is parking outside the gate and a small lot inside the gate by the house. The parking areas are not really well marked and a bit confusing for a first time visitor.
Go inside the house for info from the volunteers. Bathroom is outside in a small white block building - a one seater with a step Down inside the door. Not in the best shape. There was two porta potties towards the back of the cemetery
You can drive into the cemetery - and next time we will park at the landing by the river. That had a good amount of parking available and only 2 people there. Beautiful overlook of the river.
We walked and its only about a quarter mile from the front to back. There are mausoleums with stained glass you can see if you walk.
The hour long free tour with the volunteer is of one section with the highlights. Lots of info on the sculptures and the meanings of the symbols.
We just missed all of the azaleas - it was April 9th and had been a warm winter and they just had a bad storm come through. The cemetery is still showing some damage from the hurricane but it will recover in time.
Its free to visit - open 8 am - 5 pm Make a donation to...
